Tapping into the golden years

Huge potential is seen in various businesses as Thailand braces for a big demographic change over the next 20 years.

Sajjapot Sihamethee has neither nursing experiences nor any background in business management. But the co-founder of Tunyaluk Nursing Home, a small-scale care provider on Rarm Intra Road, is a firm believer in the viability of the nursing home business, given Thailand's socio-economic changes and rapid growth in the country's ageing population.

The Old People Playing Young club teaches computer skills to more than 4,000 members.

Established five years ago in partnership with professional nurses, Tunyaluk Nursing Home has despatched more than 1,000 staff to look after clients, mostly senior citizens, at their homes over the last five years and is optimistic about its future.

"The care-providing business is growing rapidly in Thailand, as the number of families unable or unwilling to care for their older members has increased," Mr Sajjapot. "Degrees are also not a big deal for caregivers' qualifications in this business. Caring for the elderly, particularly sick or disabled ones, calls for inherent qualities unrelated to education - compassion and a good heart."

According to Mr Sajjapot, Tunyaluk Nursing Home is ready to replace its caregivers if their performance fails to live up to the expectations of its clients.

The replacement, however, is not free. Tunyaluk Nursing Home would charge the customers 5,000 baht per year for the substitution. It would also deduct 2,500 baht from the caregiver's first-month salary as a guarantee that they would not easily leave the job. No additional commission fee is charged.
