Get over yourselves people, this is not the home you left.

you will not cure corruption with a website, the experience you have here and the sense of belonging you feel is entirely down to the relationships you have formed, your neighbors will continue to make a living in the best manner they can irrespective of how long you have rented a lot next door to land they own, the law will not begin to follow police procedure as you deem fit, your rental property will continue to have stinking drains, retailers will continue to set prices as they wish, plates will continue to be small, your young trophy wife will grow ever more insipid, streets will continue to hide unseen dangers, your girlfriends tattoo is her business and that just gets us to page two.

what a dull place you would have this be. why do you even bother?

That is why I had the rose coloured glasses surgically inserted after I had visited Thailand a few times and compared it to other countries I've spent time in. :D

As I've said many times, you can't change the world. All you can change is your own tiny portion and view of it. You have to accept the bad with the good or you'll have a miserable existence. We all have choices in life and must accept the consequences of our own actions... or nonactions. Maybe some should have listened to their mother when she told them to work harder in school and get a good education to get a better job that pays more. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. You can choose to be sad or choose to be happy. It's as simple as that.

No matter which way you look at it, you still have very few rights in Thailand. This is a fact, not any perception of how you see things. Once you realise you have no rights, then it make your home country alot more appealing.

When you can become a citizen and equal to Thais, you can then call Thailand home. Otherwise its just another holiday.

I might also add that you would not want to get sick in Thailand either, unless you have adequate health insurance. How do I know, because I have just had a gun held against my head: we won't operate until you pay in advance (3 operations=times!). Otherwise they just nurse you until you die. Health care costs in Thailand are now rocketing; its no longer cheap.

So a reality check is often required in Thailand.

Hope I haven't spoilt your dreaming?

Odds of 3/1, This will turn into another "Go Home" if you don't like it Thread.

So stand by your Beds and any negative thoughts on Thailand, keep firmly zipped,

and most important never venture out, without the Rose Tinted Sunglasses,

otherwise you might see things that will spoil the Dreamers Utopian Paradise,

and didn't you know?only bad things happen in your own Country, and that's why all the "Rose Tinters" left? they couldn't stand the Insincerity back home.

Democratic speech! who said that? your getting too Bolshie...........time you went back to reality...and watch that swinging door..blah.... blah... :boring:

Bwahahahahahahahaha idiots like you crack me up, to tight to cough for decent medical converage (or is that too skint?) and then piss and moan when you "have a gun held to your head" to pay up front for medical treatment, I bet the cost of those 3 operations makes the intial cost for decent medical coverage seem a pittance.

I've found a great little place in Saigon for those of us who have imbibed our fill of bitterness and the famous one. There's even a bit of oak panelling and laughter.....reminds me of times gone by in Thailand.....

No need to be abusive; don't think I ever called someone an idiot on TV. Insurance is for people who can't afford to pay; pay the insurance every year or just pay when you need to. I don't have an issue with that. The problem is getting funds into Thailand to pay for the emergency and the fact they don't trust you to pay, even though we already paid alot of money. Remember you are just a visitor; thus get used to it. Wishing you good luck in your life and that you will never have a medical emergency here.

I don't even class myself as a visitor, I came here for work, when work finishes up I will leave, as for medical emergencies, yeah full coverage is part of my salary package, I'll be just fine I reckon.

Argh! I was reading and reading and was getting really annoyed about this thread not being about wine until I saw SCs post about whining..

PS: If someone knows where to get imported wine in abundance (and at reasonable prices) please do inform me.

I personally feel quite strongly that if you don't like it here then you should go home. I hate the way people complain so much about Thailand. It's such a wonderful country.

No one ever lies or cheats or steals. No one is ever rude, greedy or selfish. There's no corruption. Dogs never crap outside my house. Everything is bliss.

On a more serious note, I'm gonna try to go to the local orphan house again over the weekend. It might do some of you guys a lot of good to see who's REALLY got it tough here in Thailand.

sounds a lot like home. the grass is always greener, innit?

i own a house in thailand, i owned a house in a great, expensive neighborhood in canada. guess which one required a 14 dollar per hour security guard overnight once the local youths discovered it was unoccupied?

As much as i find ianforbes bonhomie annoying, he is far from a miserable curmugdeon.

rose tinted glasses, i think not. aware that i am not in kansas anymore? definitely.

Indubitably.

Please, please tell me you have more to do with your time than these "one word and an emoticom" replies to the "farang go home" posts. This concerns me because you never seem to miss an oppotunity UG. You really should chill out and take on a live and let live outlook and you'll enjoy life far more here without trying so hard to prove it to everyone.

Ulysses IS chilled out. In fact I don't know anyone who is more chilled out than George. He just sees through all the silly complaint posts and understands we can't change anything, so we might as well enjoy what is easily available. Nobody is ever going to change Thailand into a western country and I doubt if anybody would want it to be. You gain one thing and lose another.

If he didn't have better things to do with his time, he'd probably post long rambling pontifications, like the rest of us

Besides working seven days a week, I have nothing more important to accomplish than supporting sensible posts like the one that I have quoted. ;)

My bold . . . Well that's not too difficult. It doesn't take 5 million Baht + 10 years + a Thai General friend (details are on this very website). The pre-qualifying residency period is 3 years - 2 years less than most western countries.

And there was i thinking you were just totally unnecessarily stirring the pot. :whistling:

Why do you work seven days a week?

Because otherwise, I spend most of my time sleeping, eating, reading and watching movies.

I usually only work 5 hours a day and feel like it makes my business work better and helps keeps me sane, but still have plenty of time to have fun and relax.

Interesting that because the reason i asked is that i too work seven days a week, and it appears for exactly the same reasons. I also work similar hours and it helps keep me active. i tend to feel that many of the unhappy moaners on here might benefit from having more active lives.

Maybe that is why I don't moan. I go for a walk in the morning and then have brunch. I have sex in the afternoon, and then have an hour nap before supper. I go to the bar in the evening until midnight, and write until about 2 AM before going to sleep. Occasionally I'll plan a trip somewhere on my motorbike. I never seen to get bored, and I don't have a television.

There's certainly some truth in that but maybe deep down we think we would like to be treated in a similar fashion to foreigners (including Thais) in our own countries. In the UK as far as I know foreigners living here can buy land and own companies. Mind you some cheeky Thai bought a football club so we had to get rid of him.

To be fair although I've only visited 3 times to see my gf I've always been made very welcome but maybe that's because she lives in Isaan. On my first trip I was stopped at police checkpoints 3 times in 2 days but never asked for money. I was almost dissapointed.

Just reading the ops first post, it crosses my mind his utopia might explode in a couple of weeks. While he may be blaise about his situation, he may not be able to stay out of things if Thailand erupts into a civil war.

It also crosses my mind that he has never had any 'problems' in Thailand; he might feel differently when something very serious happens to him, and the police (and all the other things me mentions) provides him with no support whatsoever.

You can be suddenly woken up from the dream you are in...

What you say could possibly be true. But, think of the excitement of being somewhere that is actually changing a country! There were riots in Bangkok and yet many people were still living quietly in their rural districts while it was going on. Foreign correspondents CHOOSE to visit countries in turmoil for no other reason than being where the action is. Some people choose to follow tornados just to experience the excitement. It's easy enough to be a wuss and go hide somewhere safe. They seldom have conflicts out in some farmer's field.

I see little value in worrying about anything and everything that MIGHT go wrong. Religious fanatics have been predicting the end of the world for years, and it hasn't come close yet. I remember when people were predicting that AIDS was going to wipe out human civilization by the year 2005. I can remember when the population of the USA was supposed to reach one billion by the year 2000. That was over 11 years ago. I tend to take the nay-sayers with a bit of doubt.
