Led Zeppelin In Comparison Make Lennon a Saint

Featured Replies

"One evening, two young girls were lounging in the bathtub of Led Zeppelin's hotel suite. Page walked in. He giggled, "We figured you need something to keep you company." Then he threw four live octopuses into the tub. The young ladies wound up enjoying the octopuses more than the rockers. "Oh my god," squealed one of them, "I've gotta get one of these. It's like having an eight-armed vibrator!"

Led Zeppelin later cheered on another adventurous female fan while she made love with her pet Great Dane. The boys in the band even provided strategically placed bacon for the Great Dane's pleasure."

Well, we can agree on one sublime song (Stairway).

Emptied their bladder quite quickly though.

Don't see much creativity coming from them nowadays do we?

Well their not exactly spring chickens Thomas.

and better they stop when all their good stuff is exhausted instead of carrying on & writing rubbish like macca. JL would have gone that way too if he had lived. It's ineviatable.

Alas non of us are - but you seem to do all right.

You've managed to make me laugh and cry more than a few times.

Hmmm they split up in 1979...before JL was offed even.

Stairway was the blandest track IMO. Considering they were around for less than a decade they were fairly productive

Led Zep 4 shifted 22 million copies in USA alone , more than any Beatle/Stones album....Overall LP sales in USA alone is 120 million / 240 million worldwide

And they never released a single in the UK , could the Beatles have sold many albums without pumping out all those 7 inchers?

Jimmy Page , yesterday, won the Q magazine Icon of the year.

If we're discussing Zep , I suggest you learn a bit about them before similar flaccid remarks.

Sales do not mean everything but when anyone mentions Stairway as a sublime song I realise they know naff all about Zep...

:D

Well Robert Plant keeps working and producing excellent work. On Monday (Oct 10 ) he did a gig in Chicago with Pearl Jam for $1,000 a ticket in aid of the Katrina Victims. Hardly a spent force...... From what I read the place sold out to capactiy of 1300, therefore raining 1.3M USD in one performance.

I am sure that in JL was alive and did something similar, he would raise the same. I don't feel it is fair to compare a solo artist and a band, of totally different genre and slightly diferent periods in time.

I still think one of Robert Plants most recent and best in the last 10 years was the accoustic version of some of Lez Zepp's greatest. I think it was called Unleaded or something like that. I lost my cd of it.

Jimmy Page, of course has had a profuse career after Led Zep split up, there is plenty to read about it here in the Jimmy Page news

John Paul Jones who formed Led Zep Has also had an excellent career after the demise of the band. You can read his bio ---> here <---

And of course we all hope that Bonzo rests in peace.

And for the Led Zep Fans have a look at this page - heaps of free footage etc to feast your eyes on, including the last interview of Bonzo by Billy Connely Looky here for the media

Superb links Matt , thank you!

You can d/l unleaded ( Page and Plant) from LImewire and a few freebie Nova sites.

The other difference between the 2 bands was the live performance.

I do like the Beatles and think they wrote some great tracks , but they never were performers in the way Zep were. I played in a Zep cover band for a while and some of those guitar parts were pretty hard to play live , let alone the singer trying to mimic Percy Planter....

:D

Were they pricks?

Probably not , but if they were , I'd forgive them.... :o

I'm only kidding about TM. I was up til 9 am reading that bloody book! :D :D

Watch out for the brain damage! :D

I only use the small hour for novels, poetry and DIY manuals :o ...and even they take second place to ... :D

robert plant has been writing and playing innovative music non stop now for , must be nearly 40 years.

his latest album "the mighty rearranger" is a good example.

john lennon and the beatles , tuneful as they were , were just pop artistes.

lennon was an art school poser who caught the zeitgeist of the times and mcartney was (and still is) a daft <deleted> who could pen brilliant melodies.

the only beatle with any humanity , was the late and very great george harrison.

ringo was a drunken circus clown.

plant and led zep. were rockers from the swamp . they were elemental and reached deep into ones subconscious with their powerful sounds , and that is the difference.

listening to beatles stuff today , well most of it has become elevator music. whatever you do , just dont turn it up.

listening to led zep today , for those who saw them and followed them from the early days , the power of it almost brings tears to the eyes. it can never ever be loud enough.

its wonderful.

they were a gift from the gods.

their behaviour as rock stars was perfect.

the behaviour of their thug manager was not.

its a visceral thing. hard to explain unless your veins run with guitar riffs and your heart beats to the throb of some subterranean and monstrous bass guitar.

Excellent post Tax.

I saw Plant last year at the Reading Hexagon , he's still one of the greatest singer/showman/lyricist even at 50 odd.

You hit the nail on the head , people who "get" Zeppelin are fans of music , not name droppers who like things they are told to like. The fact that Zep sold more units than any other hard rock band ( without using singles/gimmicks) gives me hope that there are still real music fans out there.

I was at a BBQ a few weeks back and managed to get the host to play my copy of Physical Graffiti , there were people in their 40's , who professed to know music, that had never heard of Zeppelin, and they were English.

I guess Zep fans stay away from BBQ's....... :o

My favourite Led Zep track is not real hard rocker - "Thank You" from Led Zep II. I guess I'm a romantic :o

Lovely Track , Zep's music covered many genres , Hard Rock , Blues, Country, Folk, Funk, Reggae and Ballads.

:D

Emptied their bladder quite quickly though.

A few more points , The Mudsharks escapade with the groupies is a better example of Zep's depravities in the 70's.

On the subject ot creativity , Page has collaborated with P.Diddy, The Beastie boys, The Black Crowes, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots in the last decade , whilst the drum intro to When the Levee Breaks , remains the most samples piece of mucic of all time.

Sir Paul fancies a duet with Kanye West ....?

My fav was Black Dog.Dunno if it was the music or the fact that a few people used to call me the same as a nick name... :D

:D:D:D

'Stairway to Heaven'

as Schubert would have written it, not to mention Beethoven, Mahler, Miller etc, yes it's :D

The Stairway Suite :D

(Orchestral variations upon an air by Plant & Page) :o

:D:D:D

Whole lotta love (not the Top of the Pops version), also liked Black Dog.

Must admit, I was more of a Deep Purple fan (when Ian Gillan was with the band).

I still like Kashmir from Physical Graffiti. I can't decide between II or Physical Graffiti.

Whols Lotta Love is great as well, I had a drinking session recently with my wife and explained what the song is about, now she likes to sing the line

Way down inside - honey I need your lovin

It just pumps out so well out of the stereo I have at home 5 x 100w + a 200W subwoofer. That opening 10 bars or so of Kashmir, I think I am going to blow out the windows when the volume is set to max.

I am so glad all the years ago I bought the entire collection, sadly I left one of the CD's in a rental car.

Would you please explain "Way down inside - honey I need your lovin"? I'd like to hear your explanation.

Well, its not a love song, rather a song about love-making, well thats how I have interpreted it.

It's all in the translation , all great Blues Tracks are about one thing Chownah....

Whole Lotta Love

(Bonham/Jones/Page/Plant)

You need coolin', baby, I'm not foolin',

I'm gonna send you back to schoolin',

Way down inside honey, you need it,

I'm gonna give you my love,

I'm gonna give you my love.

*Wanna Whole Lotta Love (X4)

You've been learnin', baby, I been learnin',

All them good times, baby, baby, I've been yearnin',

Way, way down inside honey, you need it,

I'm gonna give you my love... I'm gonna give you my love.

* Chorus

You've been coolin', baby, I've been droolin',

All the good times I've been misusin',

Way, way down inside, I'm gonna give you my love,

I'm gonna give you every inch of my love,

Gonna give you my love.

* Chorus

* The bit that Matt's Mrs likes to sing :o

Way down inside... woman... You need... love.

Shake for me, girl. I wanna be your backdoor man.

Keep it coolin', baby.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The whole songs is riddled with innuendo....excellent stuff!

The middle bit , that Matt is refferring to , is probably the best part , but it's too way out to write down as lyrics.

:D

...Shake for me, girl. I wanna be your backdoor man....

One of the reasons why I never used to sing along to this track blush2pr.gif

The other was... my voice. :o

"Babe I'm gonna leave you".

Their first album is my favorite. But really there are very few tracks of them I don't like.
