Who Is The Longest Participating Thai Visa Member?

Featured Replies

I have noticed that many of the present participating and most active Thai Visa members seem to be like myself, relatively newbies.

Out of interest, can any of you claim to hold the record as the longest participating Thai Visa member?

This can include moderators, bless they’re hearts, that have suffered a servitude of multiple years doing the thankless task of keeping us all in order.

So lets see who returns from beyond the grave.

I feel old...Member 443 or something like that, back in 2003.

George is the obvious answer to this, "joining" on 20th November 2002, which must have been the launch date of the forum. dr_pat_pong, the other founding admin, joined on the same day.

Apart from the obvious though, I think Simon43 (http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/user/174-simon43/) with a join date of 2nd Jan 2003 is probably the longest standing, regularly posting, non-mod, non-admin member.

Mascot (http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/user/2-mascot/), joining 7 days after George & dr_pat_pong on 27th Nov 2002, is probably the longest standing of all but he's only got 50 posts.

Rinrada is on fairly often and he is like member 13 or so......

There have been some characters over the years, thats for sure.

Looks like I joined just after you! I seem to remember that member numbers were displayed previously, but can't find them now...

Oldest member HERE

Highest number of posts HERE

BTW we assume classifieds could be a computer so maybe that does not count.

Hover over your name next to any post you've made and look at the URL that would be linked to if you clicked. There will be a number just before your member name - that's your member number. In your case, the URL is http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/user/5869-craigt3365/ so your member number is 5869 (not to be confused with 3365 which is part of your username of course!).

The member "mascot" I mentioned earlier has the lowest member number of any member who's posted - he's number 2. For some odd reason George, who joined before him, has member number 128...

Amazing

6 small months later and I join with number 4485.

I think I saw somewhere in the rules, that when one passes 10 years, the other members must give you more respect.

Or was that just a rumor I placed out?

Not sure.

I originally joined way back in 2002 or 2003, I cannot find my original post - I posted from Shanghai at the time, about a land deal here in Thailand - lost touch for a few years - but the advice I got back then was great at the time...but was WRONG!

It was about the time when it was 250K in the bank to get the Thai Wife Extension....Thai visa was 6 months out of date - they made me fork out the 400K!

I think the lack of responses on this thread suggests that most of the present active members are comparatively new comers and that the old favourites have long gone.

It seems that Thai visa has a turnover of members about every 3 years.

Could be several reasons: some have left Thailand, died, banned, became bored or perhaps Thai visa is not as popular as it used to be?

More like the info people were looking for is no longer needed, or they move on. Have kids, get a life. I avoided all of that hence here I remain :D

Dantilley, I don't see a number when I hover?

in the status bar at the bottom its 4641 for you.

one might also add that vast number of members have been banned, or simply abandoned the site as it developed its present form and policies or reckon that 10,000 plus posts is a tragic rather than grand achievement.

Member 566 myself. Though saying it that ways sounds a bit Orwellian. :D

mostly spammers, the scourge of the universe IMHO. No, I do not need Nike shoes, viagra or any of that other crap, thanks.

Number is in the status bar at the bottom, part of the URL for your member profile. As someone else mentioned, your number is 4641. This screenshot should help:

Cheers, I didn't even think to look there. Funny that, 5 days later than travel2003 and a couple of hundred apart.

Amazing of what info one can get by looking at that screen shot.

Btw, Daniel, you have 1 unread mail in your inbox on Gmail.

;)

There was computer glitch I believe and some original members numbers were scrambled, or so the conspiracy theorists say.

Wasn't George No1 and called Fester, I seem to remember you posting that previously Dan?

I joined in 2005 when I was 24. Yes it says 2011 now....I didn't sign in for ages, forgot my username, and then saw the Twitter sign in facility and just used that a few months ago. I think people are forum bingers, akin to alcohol binge drinking. They go mad for a few weeks/months before calming down for a while. I m sure many people here have more than one username...over the years.

Thanks! Probably a reply to this thread...

Yeah, Fester joined on the same day as George, and I think that is the nic George was originally using.

I think a lot of the earlier member numbers are probably out of synch due to test members being set up and deleted in the early days of the forum, a few database re-loads, etc.

one might also add that vast number of members have been banned, or simply abandoned the site as it developed its present form and policies or reckon that 10,000 plus posts is a tragic rather than grand achievement.

Yep -- a lot of very sad stuff about this forum.

Obvious example is that we live in Thailand and are not allowed to state that the number one English-language newspaper is the Bangkok Post.

It's sad to the point of being pathetic. Think about it. Some little moderator (AKA school teacher) will now come along, delete this post and send send me a warning.

Makes me feel like a "newbie".

Nope, but some little moderator might inform you that you can certainly state that the Bangkok post is the number one newspaper in your opinion but that the Bangkok Post does not like their articles posted verbatim on the forum except as an RSS feed. And while we may be able to make the occasional exception the Bangkok Post has made it clear that regular postings of their articles on Thaivisa is not allowed but then I guess you'd have to be a pathetic little moderator and pay attention to what goes on in the forum rather than leap to false assumptions. :)

And yes, any further insults will result in a posting rights suspension since these rules apply to all members.

I enjoy Thai visa just the way it is and I am appreciative of the Moderation service otherwise these forums would become overrun by the lunatic fringe, making Thai visa as an informative and discussion resource unusable.

I do realise that everyone would like to make their points without limitations in the discussions, but this is the real world and this is Thailand, where 100% freedom of speech and expression is just not possible, especially when others are taking all the risks on our behalf. This is something that must be appreciated and understood, it`s all down to common sense.

I believe Thai visa uses a good and fair system for the running of it`s forums, which cannot be in anyway shape or form an easy task and it`s all laid on for free, which is why Thai visa is probably the most popular forum service in Thailand.

Just take a peek at some other unmoderated forums and see all the crap on those for yourselves.

As for the preferences between certain newspapers, it all depends on opinion. I personally prefer the Nation to the Bangkok post. But whether or not Thai visa gives preference to 1 newspaper rather than another is no big deal. It is easy to log in to the Bangkok Post website and treat it as a separate entity from Thai visa.

Everyone has choices.

If my member number were 27 higher it would be 88888. I wonder who happened to get 88888.

...George, who joined before him, has member number 128...

That's an interesting number, too: 27

How high are new registrations today?

Regarding English news in Thailand, some months ago I discoverd ethailand.com, which gives news clippings from a cross-section of English-language publications in Thailand and links to the full articles. Now, when I've finished browsing the News forum on ThaiVisa I often go to ethailand.com for some more.

I didn't make it into the first 10,000, but it took me awhile to find this place (and they didn't have a teacher's area until later).
