When you buy a new car you normally also purchase a temporary red plate for the vehicle. How long should it take for the permanent plate to be issued. We have been waiting for 2 months now and feel that our dealer is giving us the run around.

December I got a new car - I did not get the RED plates nor was offered any. I drove all around Thailand, BKK, CM, Pattaya, etc ... many times. I carried the papers from the dealer as well as the insurance, only one time the road pirates stopped me but let me go without a payemnt. I got my plates (CM area) in Late May

I to thought the dealer was givng me a run around but in the end I got them

They where giving you the run around

Dealers have up to 6 months interest free credit from supplier/manufactorer. Until dealer has paid supplier, supplier owns vehicle despite you having separated with your cash. Dealer recieves docs to register vehicle in your name after they have paid supplier. Dealer owns vehicle when its paid to supplier but not registered in your name, looks good in accounting and for banks loans

Platelaw states vehicles must be registered/white plate within 30 days/3.000km from delivery/1st day of Insurance

Buying a new car, one should make sure purchase agreement contains a clause saying reg book and white plates within 20 days from payment recieved, or dealer accept full refund on return of vehicle

If not most dealers will give you the run around

If reg book and plates overdue(30 days), last warning to dealer, visit local Police and they will usually call dealer and all ok within 48 hours

Thanks for the informative post as I will be purchasing a new car shortly (once I decide what to buy :) ). I don't understand why in Thailand, they prefer to keep things complicated as opposed to KISS. I know of no other country where there is such a rigmarole to register a new car. In the UK, you go to a dealers, arrange your financing and pick up you car, with proper number plates and all. How I wish things can be revamped (not just for cars but in other things as well) to just make it simple.

Life in Paradise ;)

Where I come from, dealer hands docs to DLT and has reg book and plates 20 minutes later. But first they must pay supplier and taxes ofcourse to get reg docs, but as there is no grey zone red plate area, thats exactly what they do with your cash/finance, pay the supplier and taxes :)

At least the new plate law limiting to 30 days has made consumers position stronger, as its more easy now to demand reg book and plates

KBB thanks for your reply, I thought that I had previously read something regarding the 30 day thing. An email going to the head office right now, hopefully that will sort them out. Will also get a biggy from our local BIB to visit and scare them into action.

It took around 2 months to get mine from Lad Prao Ford dealer.

Took a lot of calling and moaning, as I was tired of getting pulled over at night by the BIB.

One fine being 1000b (highway police) because the red plate was fake.....

After 6 weeks they told me I had to come sign something. It was the document that is sent to the transport department for issuing the white plate....(yeah, this should have been signed the day I bought the car!!) I had waited 6 weeks for them to notice this, even with my pestering...

2 weeks after signing this, my plates were available.

The highway copper said white plates should be issued within a month.

The dealership, with some persuasion, paid the 1000b fine.

As someone has already stated the rigmarole of getting your car registered is very strange here; You pay for a car and officially you cant drive after midnight or travel outside the area it was bought for up to 6 months, whilst waiting for the dealer to get of their ass and sort out the paperwork!!
