My Thai GF wants to go to Koh Samed for a couple of days next week. I've trawled thru many sites checking prices, pictures and reviews and get the impression that many places are overpriced compared to other resorts in Thailand.Anyone know of any "little gems" that are good value for money ?Thanks

I haven't been for a few years, but back then, most places didn't have internet sites. We use to get their early, walk down the beach, and see what's available. The later in the day you arrive, the less availability there is.

Do you have a specific beach in mind?

Was looking at Vongdeurn or Sai Kaew beach. I think the 'get there and look around' option is looking favourite. We are only in Sriracha (80km from Ban Phe) so can get there early. Any tips appreciated though as you know how Thai girls hate walking more than 50 yards in the heat :-)

I'm no expert here, but we like Vongdeurn. Sai Kaew does have a really nice beach, and there are many others also.

The truck drops you off in Vonguern and we just walk down looking at places. Arriving just after lunch is great as people have checked out and they know what rooms are available. Can't remember the names of the places we have stayed at, but there are many options...again...most not listed in guide books or on the internet.

Now that I am thinking of this, may need to do a short trip there! We have fond memories of Samet.

We like Samed Villa, on Silversand beach, which is the last in the string of beaches reaching down to Sai Kaew. Can walk all the way down to Sai Kaew for restaurants and activities, but be in a quieter location. There is also a trail that leads around the point to Tubtim beach, which is our favorite place to swim.

Not the cheapest place, but far from the most expensive too. The superior seafront bungalows are cheaper than the ones recommended above, and really comfortable.

Depends what your willing to spend and what kind of room you want( tv, air con, hot shower?) and wether you want to be directly on the beach.

All of the above, you are looking at 1000-1500 and up!

But there are rooms on the next beach down from Saikaew for 500 bt and under if you can handle a fan and cold water.

There is place called Samed green inn on the right just past the ticket office where you pay the national park fee. Around 800-1000 bt. Cable tv, air con etc. Only 3 mins walk to Saikaew beach.

to have a good time Thai style stay at Withe sand resort tel 038 644000-3

and enjoy dinner with fire play next door Ploy BBQ restaurant on the beach good value and fun.

It is not far from main arrival pier ( 10 minutes local driving ) in the national park area and for a short stay it is very appropriate.

Cheers

Good responses from Bino and brd! Samed villa is more peaceful and less crowded but you have more dining and entertainment options at White sands.

Easy to get around Samet as they have introduced taxis in the last few years. So you could easily stay somewhere quite and get a taxi to some of the popular bars!

Enjoy!

If you need any other info pm me. I've been going there 10 yes so I've got some pretty good knowledge of Samet.

If you fancy a romantic meal with your gf and she likes Farang food. Summer resturant, baan puu pan. New Zealand lamb, steaks etc. Quite reasonable too!

Thanks for the tip on that website...heading down there at the start of December for two nights with my GF. Might try out the Sky High Resort at Sai Kaew...

GF liked the Samed Cliff Resort at Ao Noi Na but it looks a bit far away from most things...

All the times I've been to Samet have been to Vongduen Beach but its not cheap !!

Theres no 200-600 fan rooms anymore and most of the air con bungalows/shacks are 1500 baht up.(and very up !)

Others may have different opinion but remember going in 1993 and thinking shit this isnt as cheap as I expected.

Not been for 4 years so things may have changed ??
