2011-07-06 12:04:47 GMT+7 (ICT)

KABUL (BNO NEWS) -- A cargo plane crashed in eastern Afghanistan on late Tuesday evening, Afghan and coalition officials said on early Wednesday morning, but few details were immediately available.

The accident happened at around 11 p.m. local time when the plane crashed into a mountain in the Sayagred district of Parwan province. "The crash site is at 12,500 feet (3,800 meters) and there is an ongoing Afghan operation to secure the site," a spokesperson for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said.

British Maj. Tim James, a spokesman for ISAF, said the accident did not involve a coalition or passenger plane. "Our reports indicate it was a cargo plane. We have no further info at this time," James said.

It was not immediately known how many people were on board the aircraft or if anyone survived the accident. The cause of the crash was also not immediately known, but ISAF said there were no reports of any enemy activity in the vicinity at the time of the accident.
