SEOUL (BNO NEWS) -- At least eight people were killed and four remain missing after torrential rains hit southern parts of South Korea over the weekend, emergency officials said on Sunday.

The Yonhap news agency reported that more than 40 centimeters (15.74 inches) of rain pounded South Gyeongsang and Jeolla provinces on Saturday and Sunday, flooding at least 90 homes and tens of thousands of hectares of farmland.

A 68-year-old woman and two of her grandchildren were reported killed on Saturday when a rain-triggered landslide destroyed their home in Miryang city, located about 386 kilometers (239.84 miles) southeast of Seoul. A 72-year-old woman was also found dead nearby.

Also on Saturday, a 73-year-old woman was found dead in Uiryeong of South Gyeongsang province after falling victim to a flash flood. A second elderly woman remains missing in the same region. In addition, a 20-year-old man drowned in a stream near Cheongwon.

Two more people were reported to have been killed on Sunday when a rain-triggered landslide hit a mountain hermitage near Boseong, which is located about 397 kilometers (246 miles) south of Seoul. Yonhap identified the victims as two women aged 92 and 86.

South Korean authorities have advised people in the central and upper parts of the country to remain on alert as more heavy rain is expected in the coming days.
