Strong quake hits off the Philippines, no tsunami warning

ILOILO, PHILIPPINES (BNO NEWS) -- A strong earthquake struck off the Philippine province of Negros Occidental on early Tuesday morning, seismologists said, but no tsunami warnings were issued.

The 6.6-magnitude earthquake at 4.47 a.m. local time (2047 GMT Monday) was centered about 73 kilometers (45 miles) south-southwest of Kabankalan, a city in Negros Occidental. It struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

No tsunami warnings were immediately issued.
