SUMBAWA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- At least one person was killed after a bomb explosion targeted an Islamic boarding school in Indonesia, as police continue to struggle with students to enter school grounds, local media reported Tuesday.

The incident occurred on Monday at around 3:30 p.m. local time in Umar bin Khatab Islamic Boarding School, which is located in Sanolo, Bolo, Bima, in the Indonesian island of Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara. Police arrested 11 people possibly linked to the explosion, but according to reports, they have not been able to enter the school grounds to investigate the scene, as students have blocked out the school.

Police Headquarters Public Relations chief, Inspector General Anton Bachrul Alam, said the students were armed with sharp weapons such as machetes and arrows, but other security personnel said they were also carrying firearms.

During Monday's explosion, school treasurer Firdaus was killed. Despite police officers unable to enter the school grounds, they have remained on guard around the area, as they continue investigating the relationship between Firdaus and the bomb.

On June 30, a 16-year-old student from the Umar bin Khatab Islamic Boarding School, Sa'ban Umar Abdurahman, stabbed a local police officer to death. He claimed to be a member of extremist group Jemaah Ansharut Tauhid, which is trying to implement Shariah law in Indonesia.
