The money has to be in account, if using just account, for only 60 days for first one year extension of stay and 3 months for each renewal. There is no 60 day requirement to obtain a non immigrant O visa from a Consulate or a conversion of entry status.

Thanks for clarifying that point, so the money has to be in the thai bank for 3 months per year, which changes the numbers a bit, but not enough. The O-A option looks better if the reports are only first time - or is that dependant on which consulate I use (in UK)?

The police report and medical report have to be done on each visa application. I donot think it matters about the account where the money is held as long as you can show the 800,000baht is avaliable for expense, but donot quote me on that.

jpinx,

What about currency fluctuations?

If you are counting a loss of 5% in interest for keeping the money overseas what if the Baht appreciates/depreciates against the Oz dollar? Whichever way it goes it could be a lot more than 5%.

Yes indeed -- exchange rates will largely depend on how things go politically, and the perceived wisdom seems to say we have about 6 months before things get messy again. Having said that -- USA is not exactly setting a good example these days, so who knows......:whistling:

OK - sounds reasonable B) I suppose I should check at the relevant consulate. Is there a set format for the two reports? The local police will not have a clue - nor the doctor probably

The exchange rates in Thailand are more a function at present of the weakness of the dollar, pound, and euro. Last year during the red shirt fiasco the rates didn't change that much.

The forms should be avaliable on Thai Embassy website. There are several threads here about obtaining a o-a visa. A friend from the states has obtained two o-a from the Thai Embassy in Washington, DC.Turn around time less than a week. Cannot vouch for Embassy in London.

The pension counts as part of the money for the retirement visa, in my case 523,800 THB the other 276,200 must be in the bank for two months the first visa, three months after that, and can come out after the visa in granted

When using the combination method there is no requirement for the money to be in the bank for a specific period. The funds just have to be there on the day you apply for the extension.

Thanks that makes it easy, hope you are correct, will check it out

It is in the official rules, paragraph 2.22(5) of Police Order 777/2551.

That specifically says " with a bank " and not " with a bank in Thailand " as the previous sub-paragraphs. Or do I make too fine a distinction

The money must be in a Thai Bank for three months before renewing a retirement visa, for useing part pension and money , a combination of money in bank and income, had a meeting with a senior officer at the immigration dept 16/08/2011, if anyone received a visa with the money in a bank for a short time someone did you a favour, would not count on it happing every time.
