Featured Replies

seeking information to confirm or deny a u.s. citizens legal status to own land in thailand,as in regard's to"u.s.-thai treaty of amity". recommend a google search of this treaty to all u.s. expats and all interested in thai politics. tks.

The 1968 Treaty, (the one currently in effect, replacing previous agreements), does not permit Land Ownership in Thailand by Americans

farma, tks. for the mass amount of info. grasping at straws has always interested me. for your info the "2005 investment climate statement thailand",put out by the department of state, is quite an interesting read also. www.state.gov/e/eb/ifb/2005/42188.htm although with my server i found it by google at -u.s.thai treaty real estate-.

Well, I might well be wrong, but here's what I was told:

Under the Treaty of Amity an American can form a company without having Thai majority owners. Then that company can own things. Of course, if the company exists only for the purpose of owning land the land can be confiscated by the Thai government. I was also under the impression that this was going to change, and Americans were losing this unique privilege (if they haven't already).

The old "Americans can own land' thing goes back to the Vietnam War days, when I believe that there was a temporary window for former American GIs to own land. It was aimed at the GIs who took their discharges from the military in Thailand and settled permanently in Thailand. I think it was ended due in part to the abuse of the land ownership privilege. But I might be wrong.

Are you blind? Read Post #3. I couldn't have made it clearer.

apoligize for my inadvertant posting. i'm new to all this computer stuff. to jrincon17,the best answer i've been able to create, for myself,is to do what i iniatially came here to do,retire. it's becoming more and more obvious to me that maintaining my assets where,"rule of law" is the norm, will not only be beneficial to me, but also to any future prospects.

Americans can still own 100% of a company, however if the majority of the shares is American owned, the company is prohibited to own land!
