TRANSPORT MINISTRY WILL PUSH FOR THE 3RD PHASE OF EXPANSION AT LAEMCHABANG PORT

Transport Ministry's Permanent Secretary WANCHAI SARATHOONTHAT (วันชัย ศารทูลทัต) is preparing to push forth the 3rd phase expansion of the Laemchabang (แหลมฉบัง) Port, to accommodate an additional 18 million containers for the coming 20 years period. In the meantime the port will also accommodate the commercial opening of the Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Mr. WANCHAI said the 2nd phase of the expansion is being carried out, and parts of the expansion have already been opened to accommodate the traffic of 8 million containers. After the year 2011, the number of container loading would increase by 10 million containers. Thus, a 3rd phase expansion has also been planned for the increase.

Permanent Secretary WANCHAI also said that development of the port was also aimed at supporting the opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport in the middle of next year. The original 4-lane road has been expanded to 8 lanes to accommodate goods shipped from the airport into the Laemchabang Port, where they would be further shipped to various ports in and outside the country.
