A debate recently took place in the Little Longhorn, Center for Intellectual Enlightenment concerning visa overstay. There was a consensus of opinion that no matter how many months you over stay, the maximum fine is 20,000. I was the only dissenter to the debate. I believe that there is a limit because if there wasn't this would be a simple way to avoid expensive visas. Would someone who knows please enlighten our center.

The Maximum is 20,000baht.

However, if you are caught by the Police it could be more, and also a flight home might have to be paid for. (Can lead to deportation, after arrest).

The fine is 500 a day, with a limit of 20,000 baht. So after 40 days it doesn't matter anymore how long you overstayed.

Caught by the police will not mean more. (unless you wan to bribe them to let you go, which I would not advise).

Upon spotting an overstay you can be arrested. Normally you just pay the fine and leave the country. However, immigraiton can detain you till you have a ticket out of the country. If you can't pay the fine, you will be brought before a judge. A judge normally gives a lesser fine than immigration. If you still not pay, you have to do time instead of the fine. At the end of the detention you are then hold till you have a ticket out of the country.
