Hi everyone!

I have been trawling websites and this forum for a while now, and getting a little bit confused. So I thought I would ask my question directly and get the most up to date information...

I am an Irish citizen, and got my Thai visa while in Canada. I applied for a 1 yr, but was only given 90 days and told that I could extend it in Thailand. Not knowing any better, I said great! and headed off to Thailand. I am volunteering with an NGO here, so do not need a work permit. I am in Chiang Mai at the moment, and the visa office said that I DO need a work permit in order to extend my visa to 1 year.

I was told that I can go to KL and get a TOURIST 1 year multiple entry visa easily. Is this the case? What is the success rate?

What papers do I need? - I already have an invitation letter from the NGO and the NGO registration letter. I have valid passport etc.

At the moment I have an "O" 90 day single entry visa.

My big question is: where can I go for the best chance of getting a tourist 1 year multiple entry visa, without a work permit? I have met some holiday makers here who have 1 year visas, despite only staying for one month.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Even as a volunteer you need a work permit. It is a criminal offence to work (including volunteering) without a work permit, punishable with a jailterm of up to 5 years.

For an NGO it is not to difficult to apply for a work permit for you. I suggest they contact the labour office and see if they can start the ball roling. If you can get the Work Permit before your 90 days expire, you can get an extension of stay from immigration easily.

There is no 1 year multiple entry tourist visa and it would also not releive you of the requirement to have a work permit.

Thank you for the good advice. I am going to apply for a B visa in KL and then begin the application for a work permit. There is no choice about extending the visa, as it expires in a couple of weeks. The information about Thai visas seems to be so confusing and varied, even when I think I am sure of good advice it can turn out to be wrong. Thanks again. Wish me luck! :)

Your employer or NGO has to apply for a work permit for you, then you go to KL and get a non "B" 90 day visa, then you go to the labour dept. and get the work permit, then you can get the 1 year multiple entry visa, but you will still have to leave Thailand every 90 days. Hoops, hoops and more hoops. Been there and done it many times. You can only get a 1 year visa from the Thai consulate in your own country I was told.

The only one year visa is the multi entry and that can be obtained at most Consulates with proper documentation. More than 90 day entry is not allowed by visa - only by extension of stay from Immigration and with proper documentation as below (police order 777/2551 section 2.21)

(1) The alien has obtained a temporary visa (NON-IM);

(2) Confirmation and request has been made by the authorized

officer or head of that organization; and/or

(3) Confirmation and request has been made by the chief

government officer division level or equivalent and higher or

chief of state enterprise or other chief of government agency who

deals with that organization
