No visa needed if the passenger has a ticket for onward or return travel within 30 days from arrival in Thailand.

But be aware exit of single (and even married) women from the Philippines can be extremely difficult as officials are charged with protecting them from themselves and others (slavery/prostitution/illegal labor and such). With the level of corruption existing there the policing can be very uneven.

Now that's news, why is it not more widely known?

Do they control the passports or does this take place at the airport etc.?

They are screened at departure but know it used to go much deeper and suspect it still does - with various people having to sign off to even get to that point. It may not be an issue for some and for some payments will remove an issue.
