Millons Of Baht's Worth Damage Caused By Floods

Millions of Baht worth of damage as monsoon rains flood the streets, homes and businesses of Pattaya.

It was hard not to notice the severe monsoon rains which hit Pattaya on Wednesday Afternoon. In only two hours of rain, Pattaya was left underwater and in some areas the water level rose to nearly one foot. Severe flooding seen on Wednesday has not been seen here in Pattaya for some time and demonstrates the problems of drainage here in this ever-expanding city.

Questions must now be asked regarding the infrastructure which clearly cannot cope with the rapid expansion of this city. Our camera crews were out and about at a number of the worst hit areas such as Soi Beokeow, the Sukumvit Road, the South Pattaya Road and Soi Potisan in Naklua. Construction sites are situated around the city and in many cases, half-built walls collapsed and subsidence of partially constructed buildings took place. Raw Sewage water now fills the streets of Pattaya and we spoke with a number of residents who expressed their anger towards the City Administration for not providing an adequate drainage system.

Initial damage estimates of 10 million Baht have been mentioned however residents and business operators are now waiting for the waters to subside before the true extent of the damage is known.

Surprise, surprise. The same thing happenned this time last year and I'll bet the same thing happens this time next year and the year after.

And the traffic was horrendous. :D

And not a single policeman in sight to at least try to control the chaos.

The problem is the age old one in Thailand... maintenance.

When was the last time you saw someone cleaning out the roadside drain systems?

Quit rightly the City Administration should be blamed... they'd rather sit back and collect their fees for building permits and let's not forget the selling of water a couple of months ago, rather than proactively set up a city planning and maintenance department.

As TizMe says... it'll happen again... and again... ad nauseam. :o

I was stuck in Traffic for 1.5 hrs, going up Pattaya Klang, then on 3rd road to Pattaya Tai....Water easily over 1 ft high in some areas. I saw one Police officer who diverted us onto 3rd Road, after someone told him while passing on a motorbike, that there was an accident up ahead. I had no idea, they were planning on making Pattaya, the "Venice of the East".

I saw one policeman outside Carrefour on Pattaya Klang, they must have all been staying in out of the rain.

Protect and Serve.........yeh !

Hoorah for high ground clearance and diesel!

Have you noticed how few cars actually seem to break down despite being driven radiator deep through the flooding?

I thought you guys had a drought??

:o

You should see the level of the water in Lake Mabrachan... despite the heavy rains it hasn't changed much. :D

Exactly :o  Where's the "why do you need a big truck" comments now then?

I was practically born in a 4X4 - almost certainly conceived in one!

That's one of the reasons I have a rudimentary grasp of the issues.....

How is the situation in Jomtien (near Jomtien complex) ? Has anyone got any piccies.

Cheers

My office is just opposite Jomtien Complex and although there was the usual fast flowing river down the hill, when I went out just after the rain had stopped there was no significant flooding.

Cheers Bounder. The wifes best mate has a shop inside the complex and when she saw the piccies, she was a bit worried for her. I haven't been since August but i've heard the complex has totally changed now, with new shops etc.

It is certainly starting to smarten itself up. But still some way to go. If they can find a chain to take the big building that was intended to be a supermarket, it would help a lot. I also think it would help if the boy bars and short time bars weren't there. There are some nice restaurants and furniture/ornament shops and if more were to open, it could become a very nice spot. The design of the place is quite interesting and if all the units were repainted, it could look really attractive.

I agree, it could do with a bit of smartening up and the boy bars used to put me off but they've got used to me now and have stopped "coming onto me" :o:D I thought they were opening the "supermarket" as a sort of open stall type market?
