What Areas Are Entirely Flood Free ?

Apparently the flood areas (or those areas that tend to flood) are highlighted on some of the maps for sale, but I've never seen one. Certainly if you are up towards the mountains on the west side you are unlikely to see serious flooding there, as all the water flows downhill.

I use to rent a house in a flood zone. When it flooded big time, all my neighbors were underwater. Whoever built the house I was renting knew what he was doing. He built it on a huge pile of dirt, so all all the surrounding land was lower than my house. Even during the worst of the flooding (1996 or 1997?) water never entered that house.

Thanks for taking the time to reply...it seems that none of Chiang Mai town is entirely flood free...that's all I was trying to find out..

That'd be wrong. They're just messing with you. It is after all not a very major issue.

One reply though bordered on the malicious: Porn Ping tower is on Charoen Prathet road next to the river, and almost the first one to flood in a case of serious flooding that originates from the river.

Again: It is all very localized. Most places never flood. Some do. Amongst the ones that do, some (most) flood from 'flash floods' after heavy rain resulting from insufficient drainage. Others flood due to run-off from the mountain. And then others again (potentially the most serious) flood from the river, or perhaps Irrigation Canal (at the Canal Road) or other streams.

So good luck getting a good reply on this forum. :)

With the above in mind though, you should always ask about flooding when looking at property and places to rent or buy. Ask around in the area, and figure out how severe, and where the flooding originates from. Some places flood and they're nowhere near the river. Others are right next to the river and never flood.

There you have it.

Thanks for the serious replies ..good advice....I understand the smart mouth mentality ...I used to do it myself in other forums where I thought i was the big shot. I've had a serious fall though and realised that I need other people's help so thanks to those out there who are willing to help a newbie... Mike

I would be careful of hotels along the river or east of the old city moat. Otherwise you will not have any trouble even in a bad flood. Most of the time even those areas are OK. Sorry PunPun....are free fishing lines on offer?
