It is with sadness that I inform PTV that a character Dr Ian a long time resident of Rawai and a Tsunami Survivor passed away peacefully at 7.15 pm last night. Dr Ian a retired Scotsman and character was well known in the local area and had been fighting disease for a long time. known for his Bloody Mary's for breakfast and the occasional spill on his Red Honda also aTsunami survivor he will be sadly missed for his dry humor and easy going attitude. RIP Dr Ian

he struggled for many years with waldenstrom's disease a rare chronic cancer, his tribulations have finally passed. one of the nicest guys around.

last time i saw Ian he was on his faithful scooter making his way home i followed at a distance until he got to his soi.

prior to that i spent a nice afternoon with him at Aosane beach where he enjoyed the peace and quite, reading a book.

He told me then that he couldn't live much longer and he was ok with it as he had a good life.

he was a sweet gentleman.

take care

my friend.

Brian is sorting through the nightmare of red tape now.

I will keep you guys informed as to when the funeral will be.

At the moment we think it will be Rawai Crematorium and then a wake at Tamarind bar.

Food etc will be laid on and I suppose we will have to drink bloody mary's or a wee dram or two in his honour.

Does anyone have a picture to post of Dr. Ian in happier times.

Ahhhhh.....it just dawned on me who Dr. Ian was. Very quiet sort, used to see him at breakfast at AJ's Rawai Beach (when it was AJ's).

Didn't know he was a doctor. Does anyone know, was he a medical doctor or a phd type doctor?

RIP Dr. Ian

There lies a tale of a true character, if you want the story then come the funeral. Ian was one of the good guys, kept himself to himself but would have a chat with anyone.

He is now interred at Rawai temple with full Thai honours, tonight there was a service, the temple is open for all to pay respects, food on tap and fully decked out with flowers, pictures and even Ian's favorite armchair.

Big respect to Brian and his wife who have looked after him for months and still do and Chris who has helped to organize the funeral.

Try to be free free for an hour or two for one of the good guys on Monday.

Is Rawai Temple the one at Nai Harn Beach? What will be the best time to show up?

First question I answered myself, I know it's at Rawai Beach by Norbus, second question still open, will there be a general gathering at a certain time?

Ian was a retired Shop Keeper he sold 6 corner shops in Scotland to a large Chain and retired many years ago to Phuket. As Jay stated he fought an incurable blood cancer that basically made his blood clot very quickly so the climate in Thailand helped his situatuion. As for the Doctor Part this was always a ruse of Ian's especially with the ladies when asked what sort of Doctor he was he would gently stroke their hand and state "A Doctor Of Special Needs" It also helped him when he used to go to Hat Yai for treatment because of the long Q's he would say look out Doctor coming through and end up at the front. Of course over the many years of this all the Hospital Staff would refer to him as Dr Ian.

Ian was the only Life Long Member of the Rawai Beach Fishing Club and wore the Club T shirt with pride although he was aways to frail to go on a boat he was just proud to be part of the club.

We are all going to miss him and I am afraid that I will not be there as I am working in Dubai at the moment.

Enjoy the Wake and Bagpipe Music and pay your respects to a Character that was Dr Ian.

People will be gathering at 12, there is food beforehand. Cremation at 1pm and then on to the Tamarind Bar in Rawai for more food and drinks.

It is great to read so many great comments and memories of Ian. We held a remembrance service in his home town of Perth yesterday and it was very well attended. Ian touched a lot of lives over the years. I will post the order of service later which shows a couple of pictures of Ian in his younger days. He absolutely loved Thailand and I know he made many great friends their over the years, initially staying in Kata and then Rawai. Mr Dons in the early days was a favourite of his and I knew of a canadian chap who was a very good friend. As most of you will know he was a quiet man but one of subtle humour and great compassion who loved a party. He showed great courage battling several illness's during his life especially waldofstroms which he ultimately succumbed to. In Scotland however, we are all slightly surprised about the mentions of his wife as it was widely thought that they had been estranged for several years. RIP Provost Garvie.

The wife mentions are about Brian's wife who cared for Ianin his final months along with Brian.

Ian was estranged from his Thai wife.

I hope that clears any confusion up.
