Hi,

I have live in Thailand from 2007 to the end of 2010, on a student visa and later on on Working Visa with WP. In december 2010 I came to the UK with my wife and been living here ever since. We got married in Thailand last year, now however I want to go back with her together back to Thailand.

Since I'm not British but EU citizen, my country doesnt have embassy in Thailand, therefore I do not want to go on tourist visas or multiple entry ones and do borders runs every 3 months. Why? BEcause my passport will fill in too quickly and I would have to go back home again to change my passport.

What are my options? What are the current requirements for marriage visa? I have looked on Thai embassy UK website but it is so dam_n confusing, it says something like 20,000 bht monthly salary per person, which I cant do because if I come back to Thailand it will take a while before I can find a job. Some of my friends said something about 400,000 bht in my bank account, what was this about? Can i do it this way then? If I do not have a job with 20,000 bht a month can I just deposit 400,000 k every time I extend the visa?

Please feel free to offer any other suggestions.

Thank you,

The requirement is 40k per month income or 400k in bank account for 2 months for one year extension of stay and proof of this will be required each year. This is not a visa you get from a Consulate. You need to enter on a non immigrant O visa which your marriage certificate/wife ID card/home register copy is the normal proof requirement locally or just marriage certificate in UK.

If you are still confused or uncertain ring Cardiff Consulate in the UK, the lady there is really helpful and you can apply by post if you are not near them. The alternates are Birmingham and Hull consulates.

All have websites for more info and contact numbers, just Google them.

Once you have your Non O visa, take care of the rest back in Thailand as Lopburi states.

Good Luck.

Is marriage visa will be 1 year visa every time I extend or will I have to leave the country every 3 months?

There is no marriage visa, you apply for a single entry or multiple entry Non-immigrant "O" Visa, single entry allows an entry of 90 days, a multi allows a 90 day entry as long as the visa is valid. If you do not want to do border runs every 90 days, you apply for a one year "Extension of Stay" based on marriage. The extension can be applied for every year, no need to leave the country, just do an address report every 90 days at your applicable immigration office.

why it s all about money in thailand, can you get a O visa and do border run if you dont have 400'000 or 20'000 b income? no extension, just border run...

you don't need 400 000 to live here. i can live with 14000 baths a months and even less if she has a job.

And your name begins with "Swiss"? :whistling:

OK, to be fair we also think of chocolate. :D

I am sure people could live in debt here if allowed; so do not believe living on 14k is really valid. It is the requirement for one year extensions of stay that is set at 400k/40k - not visa issue which often require no show of funds. Females married to Thai are not subject to this requirement but the expectation is the female follows the male so if a foreign male they will move to his country and only the exceptions would then face the 'money' criteria. I suspect this dates back to the need for home country wives to join there husbands in Thailand.

Yes you can do border runs or visa runs but at some point may be asked if you are illegally working as marriage does not allow work without a work permit. You can also stay/extend on basis of work or education or other reasons.

What should we do if dont have 40K per Month and 400k In Bank??????????

Apply for a multi-entry Non-Immigrant "O" Visa, and do a border run every 90 days, if you make an entry just before the visa expiration date you can stay about 15 months.

What you should do will depend on you and wife. You might want to consider moving to your home country, at least for working life, if that would be financially advantageous. You might look for other ways to extend your stay in Thailand such as education/employment/NGO activities. You might save to meet the requirements. You can use the above multi entry non immigrant O visa and you can extend 60 days on any entry to visit wife (but that will cost 1,900 baht each time and total allowed times in a specific period may be limited by office used). You can also obtain single entry non immigrant O visas and tourist visas and visa exempt entry.
