PatongPete Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 Havana Cigart shop has a fine selctin of wine and does volume prices. Havana Cigra Shboppe in Fisherman Way Business Garden about 500 mt, south of HaYek ( for non Phuket folks HaYek.....5 corners. is aka Chaloing Circle. The is a wine loves next door who sells less wine. I'm not going to SPAM his prices but do check them out. Small Shop with boxes to the ceiling.. A good sign!
madmitch Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 Looks like you have been drinking too much of it! Generally, I just won't pay the prices demanded for a palatable wine in Thailand but I will have a look at this place when I am back in Phuket.
petercallen Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 I know Australian wines are very expensive here and wines from other countries would be the same I am not a wine drinker here but the prices in the major supermarkets seem more reasonable to me

Jimi007 Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 The wine here is way over priced! It's a faring item with a large import duty it would seem... Plus it's hot here, which will ruin a good wine.
steelepulse Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 Tax is either 350% or 400% on imported wine to protect the bustling Thai wine industry.

I know many people who got off the box for health reasons... Dreadful stuff. Life is to short to drink cheap wine! I buy either Kookabura' or Cahteau Vendome for 1900 per 6 bottles, about twince the box and find it more that twice as good.

Actually you are wrong, we travel to Australia at least once a year Australian wines of the brands i know are at least three times the price here I mean retail price not the discounted prices you can buy wine for in Australia The same as Vegemite AUST 140 baht here 630 baht the same size jar the last time i ran out and bought a jar here
KarenBravo Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 My wine buying technique has never let me down Don't buy the cheapest. Don't buy the most expensive, middle range will do. Pick the prettiest label.

Actually all wine is supposed to be good for your health, its the alcohol in it thats bad for your health no matter how much you pay for it
Shot Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 What are the favorites in the 250-400 Baht range? What would people like to see stocked at their local mini mart?:jap:
KarenBravo Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 Actually all wine is supposed to be good for your health, its the alcohol in it thats bad for your health no matter how much you pay for it That used to be the thinking, but, further investigation revealed that it was actually the small amount of alcohol each day is healthy for the heart.

Shot Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 OK, 500-600 you can get a decent bottle? What are the preferred labels?
KarenBravo Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 OK, 500-600 you can get a decent bottle? What are the preferred labels? There's a nice French red wine called Black Sheep. The one that has three letters for the three varieties of grape is the best one (GSM?). Available in Wine Connection at 600 Bt.

MisterMan Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 Great topic! I think it is the sulfates in wine that are bad for you. Mont Clair is horrific and never consistent. The wine "mix" is imported and then mixed here so there is no import tax. Not sure what the mix is but that is what I have heard. Also some Thai wines are expensive because they have to import the knowledge. Will give the Kookabura a try. Not sure what twince the box means though. Villa has some decent drinkable wines as does Makro and and Promphan. Le Pump red from Makro is ok, under $500. Also the Santa Lorento red's (Cab, Syrah) are ok from Villa..at about 390 net. So from Wine Connection what is good? I kknow the Paseo del Sol is awful and gave me one of those 2-day headaches!
