Thaksin Offers To Be Trade Ambassador

This is perfect !!!!! Since Thailand is one of the most corrupt countries in SE Asia, what could possibly make more sense than to take a convicted criminal and put him in charge of creating more business for Thailand ? The Elite card worked out so well, I can hardly wait for more brilliant ideas.....

The 300,000 new rai for Thailand is my favorite.

Incoming Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has announced that her Pheu Thai-led government will push forward three mega projects including land reclamation from sea.

According to Ms Yingluck, the three mega projects include land reclamation of 200,000-300,000 rai with an operating cost of 12.5 billion baht per four square metres, rail transportation from Bangkok to other provinces and integrated water management in 25 river basins.

Ex-Prime Minister Pol Lt-Col Thaksin Shinawatra had mentioned the three projects after the Pheu Thai won the 3 July general election, saying the Pheu Thai-led government would undertake those mega projects for growth distribution.

http://www.dredgingt...n-mega-project/

=============================================================

It's a suitable replacement for the new province, Nakhon Suvarnabhumi, Thaksin and his cronies wanted to create and reap billions from.

http://en.wikipedia....abhumi_Province

.

.

Land reclamation from the sea is a horrible idea.

"It's a suitable replacement for the new province, Nakhon Suvarnabhumi, Thaksin and his cronies wanted to create and reap billions from".

This is an appalling situation - but not unsurprising!! I thought that EVERYTHING they did was supposed to benefit the country and it's people - not in Thailand, clearly!!!!

A very good offer.

Thaksin is a smart businessman. He has a real knowledge of the business world. He has all the connections, in Thailand and abroad.

How can you make the difference between a winner and a whiner ? A winner is always making plan for the future, a whiner knows only how to cry about the past.

On July 3rd, the Thai people have made their choice clear, they don't want to get stuck with a bunch of sore losers.

It won't stop the whiners, but for the rest of us there is hope for a better future. And we are more than confident with the people in charge

Your a laugh a minute.

Yes!!! a real joker - although he is not funny and I feel sorry for him holding such firm and staunch support for Thaksin when a majority of the posters (scotbeve excluded on this) realise and understand what a liability and 'thorn in the side' Thaksin is for Thailand!!!!:jap:. Let us pity these two poor individuals and pray for their souls :D . Altogether now!! "may they be spared from their ignorant and foolish views, dear god"!!!

A very kind offer from a criminal fugitive that the government says will not be issued a diplomatic passport.

Don't forget, a puppet government installed by coup-makers who illegally overthrew an elected government and trashed the constitution. And, ignored the results of two successive elections.

Ergo: Your point is worse than moot.

And don't forget:

- 'overthrew an elected government ' - got rid of a pack of leeches who bough elections is more to the point.

- 'trashed the constitution' (which by the way gave little penalties for vote buying, and desperatly nneded to have some teech on this subject.

- 'ignored the results of two successive elections' more to the point, the electoral commission did their job.

- and don't forget that when the 2006 coup happened many people came out onto the streets and gave the soldiers roses and flowers - highly symbolic.

Saying Thaksin is only in it for himself is forgetting the why he was charged with trumped up retrospectrive charges.

The charges were not retrospective. The law he broke was in place long before he broke it. Misleading red propaganda.

Trumped up? In what way? Please explain.

regarding propaganda :

... very likely the charges & conviction were politically motivated and orchestrated. That's not red propaganda, but a reasonable conclusion.

is the man a criminal if his political enemies, once in power, make certain that he is convicted of something, or even *anything* ? Since the current convictions are clearly political, the convictions lose their authenticity - whether the convictions were correct or not.

Objectively, it is clear that Thaskin did many things while in power to benefit himself and his family. Whether you like him or not, that much is clear. Perhaps his actions were criminal...

But also - whether you like him or not - it is equally clear that the charges and the conviction against him are politically motivated, just as was the dissolution of the PPP, most of the terrorism and arson charges against the red shirts, etc. This entire tangle of recent history is a difficult mess to sort out.

(side note here : Nick Nostiltz's 2 books "Red vs Yellow" are a great help in sorting out current events ! )

And whether Thaskin really offered to be Trade Ambassador or not - as someone pointed out - this was already floated over a month ago... rolleyes.gif

Perhaps his actions were criminal..................all doubt was removed when the judge said "Guity as Charged"

Could you please explain how the motivation of those bringing charges, heard by a court and found to be accurate and guilt established (without consideration of the prosecutor's motivation) suddenly cause the convictions to lose their authenticity?

Does this flow on to the Nuremburg trials? Is the ICJ in the Hague just a farce in your opinion?

a note on syntax - Jurgen's reference people in charge, refers to the people in authority now, and he was not referring to "the people" as in the Thai people, or the red shirts, etc as your reply indicates that you understood it...

How do you know what Jurgen meant? Is he sitting next to you?

and if I said "yes"??

Reach over and give him an ear flick for me. biggrin.gif

Winners and whiners....this forum unfortunately is full of the latter. The armchair loser critics whose only objective in life is to jealosly knock the winners.

It is very plainly obvious the "we" consists of the vast majority of Thai voters.

Thailand desperately needs proactive progressive business minded leaders. Saying Thaksin is only in it for himself is forgetting the why he was charged with trumped up retrospectrive charges. The whiners single him out but forget the blatent back pocket stuffing bumbling Govt ministers that were so resoundly beaten at the polls. Seems the Thai population know more than the armchair whiners ..... And I am not saying what he stood accused of was right or wrong. Compared to some Thaksin is lily white. But charges aside .....where are the people who would make a better roving Trade Ambassador? Time to forget the past and get on with the future and bring a progressive future for Thailand

Not sure what was trumped up about Thaksin money-laundering funds through his chauffeur and family members to avoid taxes. He is under Thai law a convicted criminal. In no way has the election changed that. The attempt to get him appointed as an official ambassador has nothing to do with exports. It has everything to do with legitimizing Thaksin by the government as a softening up process to get him back. He knows that there will not be a referendum to legalize money laundering. That would be a laugh. Having him shaking hands with other country leaders will shine up his image though. The fact that the new foreign minister has asked the Japanese government to give Thaksin a visa so he can shed some crocodile tears at the scene of the Tsunami, is just for starters to show that the foreign minister for one is bought and paid for.

Pheu Thai party list MP Thanik Masipitak said Mr.Thaksin had expressed his wish during their meeting in Dubai.

PM Yingluck dismissed as groundless a report that Thaksin has offerred to work for govt as an envoy for foreign trade negotiations.

Take your pick which one is lying? I'll go for the known perjurer.

The majority of the poster Vs the majority of Thai voters ?

What you actually means is those posters are definitively out of touch with what Thai people want ?

I'll agree with that.

But that they represent the majority of the posters here, i don't agree.

The most vocals maybe, but not the majority

Or it would mean that the majority of the posters are out of touch with what the majority of Thai people wants.

The cost of containing and removing tyrants is very high. The longer you tolerate them the worse it is in the end.

So someone messed up royally, huh! The last I checked a 'Shinawatra' was running the country.

But which Shinawatra is actually running the country?

The legally elected one or the other one?

They will of course try but at the end of the day, a turd can not be polished, no matter how big a team you employ to vigorously shine and buff.

You're just not rubbing hard enough, give it a chance :-)

The coup didn't overthrow any elected government since there was none at the time of the coup.

And what do you mean ignored the result of two successive elections? That doesn't even make sense even if one tried to apply normal red propaganda to it.

As usual, a few dedicated Thaksin supporters are trying to supply spin by claiming "retroactive laws" and "political motivation". The Rhatchadapisek land deal isn't the only criminal charge he is up on, it just happens to be the only one for which he was actually in the country at the time of the trial (which took place under his "own" PPP government), and thus able to be convicted of. Let's remind ourselves of the findings of the asset seizure case:

"The court verdict said TOT had lost THB70 billion in revenue when AIS was allowed to reduce the share of pre-paid turnover it paid TOT from 25% to 20% by altering its build-transfer-operate (BTO) concession with the telco. TOT and fellow state-owned telco CAT were also deprived of concession fees totalling THB60 billion when a telecom excise tax was introduced to replace the fees. Meanwhile, the Transport Ministry's contract with Thaicom (formerly Shin Satellite) was amended several times to the firm's benefit, costing the state THB20 billion, the ruling said".

http://www.voipproviderslist.com/world-voip-news/ais-examined-after-thaksin-asset-seizure.html

Also: "It came out during the trial that Thaksin's son, Panthongtae, went to Burma with him at least once and that during the visit, there was a demonstration of what Thaicom had to offer as the Burmese junta sought to enhance that country's telecom development.

However, a major point to consider is who was or were responsible for the distribution of more than Bt300 million straight to Thaicom following the loan agreement".

(Regarding his using an official government trip to sell his own company's satellite equipment to Burma, after the Thai government gave them a loan to buy it. The article also has a good summary of the share manipulation within the Shinawatra family prior to the sale of AIS).

For the benefit of those who weren't around from the start of the Thaksin years, there are one or two other little items:

One of his first political promises was to solve Bangkok's traffic problems or resign. Needless to say he did neither.

He "mistakenly" transferred millions of dollars worth of shares into other peoples names, including his maid and gardener, and then "forgot" about it when declaring his assets upon first becoming PM.

His government's cover up of bird flu in an attempt to protect Thai poultry farmers, leading to the death of at least one child:

"The first boy who died is believed to have picked up the virus after touching the carcasses of infected poultry in his village in western Kanchanaburi province. His father, Chamnan Boonmanut, hit out over the government's handling of the crisis on Monday. "The government knew, so why didn't they tell the public so that we could protect ourselves?" he said. "Nobody wants to get sick and die".

"Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, faced with accusations of a cover-up, has admitted his government initially kept quiet about its suspicions that avian flu had broken out, to avoid causing public panic".

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/3432545.stm

And not forgetting the war on drugs. However "popular" it may have been it essentially gave police official sanction be be judge, jury and executioner. Hardly a democratic policy towards people presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Maybe one could forgive one "little mistake", and claim the prosecution of it was due to ulteria political motives, but the evidence points to a man who has cheated the Thai people at every opportunity he has got. Even his start in successful business, by being married to the daughter of the chief of police and being awarded the contract to supply computers to every police station in Thailand, stinks of corruption. His callous disregard for people's lives, his numerous lies, his inciting of "revolution", and the disappearance and/or deaths of those who have sought to bear witness against him all point to his true character. This is the man who is a hero to a few on this forum, the man they want to see representing the country. The dregs of humanity.

costing the state THB20 billion

Wonder how many schoolbooks or tablets that would have bought the poor?

But since they clearly don't want to be educated - by taking part of the farce to vote in the criminals again - I say fawk'em, let them be poor, under-educated and starving. It is their choice.

Fair enough?

Strange you should mention armchair whiners (Dem supporters), only started posting recently after a couple of years of read only. It as not escaped my attention that since the July 3rd Massacre of the Dem party more and more dem sympathisers have been posting on here. Thats a tad strange that the whiners are growing when you think it would be prudent to keep quiet after that election humiliation. I always believed that winners attract winners but the red sympathisers (in numbers) have generally stayed at about the pre election level. The voices on the political threads on here are not representative of the westerners I have met in Thailand over the last 11 years, so I can only hope the exchange rate changes in your favour asap and you can afford to get your butt off the computer and go back to the bar

A better Roving Trade Ambassador... let me see..? is Gengis Khan up for the job, Attila the Hun, Pol Pot, Idi Amin, Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler, Oliver Cromwell, Mao Tse-tung, Kim Il-sung, Caligula.... in this company Thaksin would be about top of the list... Ask the Southern Muslims .. or ask the mothers of the 2840 would be drug dealers murdered in Bangkok and surrounding area

because Thaksin caught his son smoking marijuana.. Give us a break about this convicted -on the run criminal ... lets hope he gets his day at The Haige... Saddam was an angel compared to Thaksin..

Where is the evidence that Thaksin is a great businessman outside of having a monopolistic government concession that forced excessive costs on to consumers and kept out foreign competition? Did he become a brand name in any other business? All his earlier ventures seem to have failed miserably, with the exception of his dubious supply of mainframes to the police when he was the policeman who wrote the specs and organised the tender.

How many of you know the story of the goose that laid the golden eggs? Or the origins of the expression, "cooked his goose"? Thaksin knows how to keep the Thai goose happy , well fed and laying eggs, Abhisit's team was too greedy and short sighted, it cooked the goose. So Thaksin is good at skimming the cream off the milk, but the cows will only produce milk if they are well fed and happy. The Dems preferred meat to milk, so the herd suffered. The herd wants their former farmer back in control.

Sorry for the agricultural metaphors, but they are a simple way to express a complex situation.
