NOTEBOOK COMPUTERS TO BE PROCURED FOR STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE NATION

The Information and Communication Technology Minister, Mr. SORA-AT KLINPRATHUM (สรอรรถ กลิ่นประทุม), stated that students in the next academic year throughout Thailand will be able to have their own computer notebooks.

The ICT Minister conducted an inspection tour to receive grievances from the public, and today, he visited KAOLEAW (เก้าเลี้ยว) District of NAKHON SAWAN Province and had a discussion with the locals. The minister said the government will support students with educational opportunities, so that they can be technologically up-to-date. He added that, from 2006 onwards, the government will procure 250,000 laptop computers for students nationwide.

The scheme will be initiated at the next academic year.

USUAL WARNING: this is government propaganda.  Please disregard, until you see free notebooks in your school.

PB you are probably 100% correct although it may depend upon who writes the purchase order - Don't be suprised if out of the blue X amount of small note (little exercise) books turn up for distribution. :o:D:D

Was it the same project as "dirt cheap" notebooks touted by Americans? That was interesting - under $100, sturdy, without hard drives - USB only, open source software. If it is - it has been cancelled. The latest idea was for students to assemble their own computers and let them learn how it works in the process. Also a good idea but I don't think those are notebooks - it's not that easy to assemble a notebook yourself.

Who can keep track of their promises? "A promise a day keeps Taksin away" - how to survive the next cabinet reshuffle.

Plus - I read that article on the concept of the students assembling the computers themselves - honestly anyone that conceives this type of idea, then actually speaks about it needs looking at. If it had bee a team would visit each school and assemble the units teaching some students and staff simple fault finding and operations I could go alng with it but as it appeared - Will not work.

Yes I also wondered if the 250000 notebooks were the same 250000 that it was proposed to assemble - or are they two separate buys and 250000 looks a good number??
