La Nina to keep on wreaking havoc

By The Nation

Thailand will likely be hit by two tropical storms originating in the Pacific Ocean in September and October, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) said, as a climate expert warned separately that the country would continue to be adversely impacted by the Pacific Ocean weather phenomenon known as La Nina.

The one or two tropical storms likely to affect the Kingdom in the next two months are far fewer in number than the 10 to 20 that routinely batter the Philippines and Vietnam between May and September each year, a source from the TMD said.

Most recently, Thailand was affected by Tropical Storm Nock-Ten, which caused damage in several provinces including Phrae, Nan and Lampang.

"The monsoon trough and the south-west monsoon were the main causes of flooding in Thailand during the past few weeks," the source said. The monsoon trough is an east-west low-pressure zone that commonly appears in this region in the summer months.

According to TMD records, Thailand saw 185 tropical storms between 1951 and 2010.

Global climate-simulation models show that Thailand is likely to be adversely impacted by the La Nina weather system over next few years, said Anond Snidvongs, director of the Southeast Asia START Regional Centre at Chulalongkorn University. This comes on the heels of a recent El Nino, a related weather phenomenon.

Thailand has faced severe impacts from La Nina systems twice in the past four years, the worst such sequence in 60 years.

"La Nina causes heavy rain across the country; this demonstrates why careful water-management plans are important for the future," Anond said.

It's not sealing off, of vast tracks of land, it's not the deforestation, it's not widespread agricultural monocultures, it's not general and globally widespread missmanagement of precious natural habitats and their resources, NO it's "la Nina" if not a weather system, maybe god, the almighty, destiny may be blamed, we haven't done anything wrong, it's out of our reach, our jurisdiction, maybe out of our comprehension as well - we claim to be the INNOCENT but are the true rapist's and keep doing it with increasing blind madness, as if it's only a virtual game on X-Box to win!

Well said, La Nina has been around for hundreds of years, its effects may have been exacerbated by climatic changes, but its mans relentless destruction of natural watersheds, forests and wholesale land use changes that are really to blame.

La Ninas just getting the blame as she's foreign.

We may not be blame for la nina but impacts such as urban flooding and landslides are related to deforestation and urban planning....

And Thaimaishoe... I am sure you are not a redneck racist with a pointed hood in the closet but a jovial chap with a good sense of humour...

What next? Spics and coons may brake my boons but wasps will never hurt me.... something like that is it?
