Many people recommend to buy a Honda or Toyota as they have good resale value and good aftersales service.

Not impressed by Yaris and Vios so am considering Honda City or Civic - the City's size is about right for me but my Thai friends say that the Civic always holds its value a lot better.

The showroom salespeople advised not to purchase the City now as it's due for a facelift very soon.

Additionally, they said that noone was buying the Civic now as the new model is released at the end of this year - images of the new design are already on the net.

So with this in mind, it's really not worth buying a new Honda City / Civic now, particularly as I would have to wait about 3 months for the car to be delivered...is it?

AFAIK, virtually no dealer still has stock of the old model City anymore, and 3 months is a pretty standard wait time for Honda anyway, so you may as well wait for the minor change version.

But if you're not in a rush, the new Yaris and VIOS are *actually* new models - the new City is just a minor change.

As popular as the Toyota brand is here in Thailand, I am not a fan of the Yaris or the Vios designs in the way they look or drive - the worst thing is the display being set in the centre console. Why do they do that?!

I took the new Mazda 3 for a test drive a few days ago and loved it, but it's pricier for sure and I don't think it's fuel economic. I know the Mazdas are supposed to be designed to be a fun drive (which it is), but the interior is lacking in a lot of things which competitors are introducing as standard - USB port, navigation screen, bluetooth etc. It is a good looking car for sure though.

Ford's aftersales service and resale value is a worry (as I'm not sure if I will keep the car for more than a year or two), otherwise I probably would have gone with a Fiesta Sport already.

sonic,

when i visited the honda showroom, the salesperson informed me that the launch of the new civic will be some time in Nov and that it is possible to pre-order one to be delivered at launch. so, this is something you may want to consider... i wouldn't do so personally as i would definitely want to see/feel/drive the car before committing myself to one!

also, i wouldn't bother with a mazda - despite it's desired positioning and image (ie. sporty drive, etc...), i think the engines are simply crap compared to what most other competitors have in the market now... just look at the power outputs of the 2.0l engines (both turbo and n.a.) from most other brands (eg. bmw, honda, mitsu, volkswagen, audi, etc... even kia and hyundai!) and you will realise how ridiculous the mazda engines are! i think the only large car brand with such crappy stock engines and transmissions is toyota...
