Greg, can you say how you lost yr job? I can understand if the answer's no, because sympathy is in short supply on TV!

I worked in the telecom industry. Thaksin decided that he owned that space for himself, and used the privileges of his office to unfairly drive everyone else out of business.

That is all I will say on the subject. Too much more and I could identify who I am. Not that I have any doubt the demagogue in Dubai couldn't figure it out if he really wanted to, but I doubt he would go to the effort of tracking me down. Making it obvious though, that would just be stupid.

Posted

I have been personally affected by Thaksin. I lost my job in part because of him.

Let's say someone rapes your daughter, and then everyone else around you says "we don't care about you or the injustices done to you, because he gave us money and other free stuff." Wouldn't you be just a bit miffed about the situation, even if you knew there was little if anything you could do about it? Wouldn't you at least try to explain to these people why what they are doing is hurtful and spiteful?

You may not understand it, but the emotional involvement is very real to me. Given that I cannot do anything about the situation, I choose to voice my opinion on this forum. It may have no effect, but it makes me feel better. Perhaps you should cut the guy a little slack who is cursing at the clouds. Thaksin hurts real people, even if he hasn't yet hurt you. To me, he is not a theoretical.

You are comparing losing your job to raping your daughter!

Yes I am. Try addressing the subject rather than trying to cloud the issue. I sure felt the same as if I had been raped by him. Since you have no idea of the circumstances, you are not at liberty to comment. As you so conveniently told me earlier, stick to things you know something about.

Thaksin is a truly hideous creature.

Posted

I see our conflict as the heart of the issue. It would be a shame to to dump it just because it upsets you.

You and I are 180 degrees apart on a couple of basic points that can, if discussed calmly and unemotionally, be a help to long term Farang residents of Thailand.

My God you have a lot of patience with this individual. His ability to clock up so many posts without ever being able to have a mature debate without resorting to childish tactics, flaming and innuendo is truly remarkable. Even more remarkable that he's still around.

On the premise in the OP: I find myself sometimes wholeheartedly agreeing because it truly doesn't matter what a bunch of Thaivisa-Farangs think, but then at other times I realize that this is now all out there on the internet, and real people may actually find it on Google and think that there's substance to some of the tripe being posted; there just isn't that much English language information out there on Thai current events and some journalist might actually read it. This is particularly at times when the eyes of the world are more focussed on Thailand, for example due to incidents or elections. But currently, with a stable and undisputed government in place it doesn't really make sense in any way to debate politics on this site.

Next! :cheesy:

We have (on average) higher incomes

So what we think, the stuffs we buy, places we choose patron or not, do make a difference.

If tomorrow Yinluck decides to fine prostitutes patrons, like it is done in other countries, farangs will vote with their feet.

So obviously she won't

We ? Who is "we" ? And higher income than who ?

This thread is quickly becoming ridiculous.

The poster who compares being fired to being raped. The other one who pretends not to understand that he is allowed to make any comment he likes but that he is just getting completely out of touch with the general Thai population.

And now the little mademoiselle who believe that because you have money you're allowed to do whatever you like. Are you related to DSK by any chance ?

You are saying that Thailand is on the brink of civil war. I am saying that Thailand is no where near civil war and it is business as usual. Am I correct in stating your position?

No. You are not correct. This is what you do. You are trying to drive the debate based on your fictional imposed structure of an argument. It's a narrative I won't fall for and don't accept. Don't try to "prove" that is what I meant. I am telling you now you are wrong. Accept it and move on. Please stop writing posts directed at me personally along with your abrasive psychobabble insults. How many times do I need to request that from you? I am serious now -- you have gone way beyond annoying. We have nothing further to discuss. I would like to post to the board about political events and issues when I wish, as I feel others should if they wish. Whether your judgmental presumptions of the reasons that we post meets your personal rigid DOGMA about why and when people should or should not discuss Thai politics is YOUR problem.

If you don't want me to write posts directed to you stop writing posts directed at and criticizing me. I don't blame you for not wanting to state your position, simply put as far as I can see your only coherent position re my posts are flaming me. If you post political opinions please don't expect others myself included to treat them like the ten commandments and not open to criticism and comment. If you think my posts represent rigid dogma so be it. I really don't care nor do I consider you the gatekeeper of my writing or who I write to. If you don't want to read my posts that is your prerogative. Although only reading posts that you agree with you will make you narrow minded but that is after all YOUR problem, ;)

I'd always thought that ...mongering meant to sell; like fishmongers, ironmongers and rumourmongers. If we went out looking for fish, we call it 'fishing', where I come from, though Ian can probably comment better.

Anyway, while it might be pointless to discuss politics in this forum, generally our scandalised moral sensibilities attract even more ridicule than our political views, or even our culinary habits. But perhaps we debate these things on this forum so that we can better form our own opinion by exposing it to the cut and thrust of intellectual fencing (or find a 'second-hand' knock-off opinion when we lack one of our own through intellectual fencing)

Interesting that since your obvious sympathies have been with the reds for years, and they are obviously in power now with that Yingluck -- Thaksin puppet/clone horror show, that such a formerly hyper-actively involved political poster like yourself, miraculously now thinks there is no point in discussing Thai politics anymore. Kind of transparent, don't you think?

So when do you expect Thaksin to come back? Have you no opinion? I would think you would care.

Yep. While I don't think discussing Thai politics is a waste of time for those who are interested, some things on this forum ARE. No choice but to go with the last resort Ignore option. Mods, if you see this mess, be aware that it is now officially over. Best regards.

I get my second-hand knock-off opinions in bulk from Youtube comment sections.

The answer to that question was in the section of my post that you removed from the quote. The very same paragraph actually. Let me save everyone the trouble of going back to the previous page and quote it here. Tedious, but we've come to expect that.

So what that means is that I agree with you in principle that discussing Thai politics may be worthwhile. I just don't think it's worthwhile to discuss it here, with you, at this point in time.

Next!

EDIT: Oh, wait, there was one more question:

So when do you expect Thaksin to come back? Have you no opinion? I would think you would care.

I don't really care that much if or when he comes back to be honest. I think most people would agree that he is a divisive figure. My stance is that there is work to be done in Thailand far beyond the importance of Mr. Thaksin. If his return means a return of army-tolerated unrest by Yellow-clad goons, such as the airport takeover, meaning that the government can't actually get to work then I for one would prefer to not make the person of Mr. Thaksin any kind of priority.

So do I care... About Thailand, the people and democracy: yes. About Thaksin.. Well, I would speak up when some idiot goes off the deep end comparing him to Hitler and what not, but do I care if or how or when he comes back.. Not really, no.

OK

zza09 mate when you post I imagine you sitting in a comfy chair next to a roaring fire naked apart from a circa 1830 diving helmet and clown shoes with a tyre tread depth gauge in one hand and an original first run edition of " Bear Baiting For Beginners" in the other as your faithful midget ( named Admiral Yamamoto for reasons known only to your good self and dressed in a jaunty little sailor's cap) gently nuzzles, licks and occasionally bites your unencumbered testicles ( with your fevered encouragement one must hasten to add should one otherwise consider him an impertinent wretch and utter cad)? :D

About Thaksin.. Well, I would speak up when some idiot goes off the deep end comparing him to Hitler

Given that I am probably the staunchest advocate on this site of pointing out how Thaksin is in fact a demagogue and is very similar to Hitler, I find your characterization of me as an "idiot" insulting. You have obviously never met that despicable cretin, or you wouldn't be making such a ludicrous statement.

Thaksin has the exact same personality as Hitler, and in my opinion is easily capable of acting similarly to Hitler given the right set of circumstances. If you believe I am an idiot for observing this, then I would say that reflects more on you than it does on me.

Thaksin can not be allowed to return at any cost. If he tries to come back, there will be fighting. Count on it. There are still people in this country with integrity.

Thaksin does not have a mustache.

Thaksin did not kill 6 million Jews.

Thaksin did not start a war against Russia.

Thaksin was not a vegetarian.

Thaksin did not start a war that killed 60 million people.

Thaksin didn't bomb London.

Hitler had no interest in sports or games of any kind.

However Greg, your post is a good example of the topic of this thread. Bravo for that. ;)

or even be considered on an equal footing with any Thai citizen

Sorry but I can't agree with this part of the OP, as I generally try to consider Thai citizens as not being inherently superior/inferior, to all of us other human beings.

We/they may be better/worse educated, or richer/poorer, but not even to have a chance of being equal is just plain wrong. :jap:

What an idiotic post.

Imagine what might have happened had Thaksin been in charge of Germany back in 1939.

Any leader can grow a moustache. And any powerful leader can start a war.

Thaksin would have been like a kid in a sweet shop. He would have had the time of his life.

Poland today; London tomorrow. Oh -- and after that, let's take out Man Utd.

Times change. Personalities don't.

This thread should have been locked from the start. The Thai Visa farang political experts were pretty much confined to the Thailand news and now they have taken this over too. Nearly every forum now has hateful paranoid posters and I for one get really tired of hearing the nasty criticism about the lawfully elected government. And YES, I'll again use the hated remark that if you don't like it here, go home.
