Conmplete Peace, A Philosphy Of Life For Expats In Thailand

I'm sick of reading ridiculous posts on this forum that refer to Thailand as a third world nation. It doesn't mean what you think it does and even if it did it wouldn't apply to Thailand in the 21st century. Are there really so many thick people living over here?

Settle down, buddy ! As far as I know, Thailand is classed as a second world country. And if you get right out in the boondocks it can almost seem like a third world country. And there are certain aspects of life here that seem rather third worldish. People get rather tired of them so they refer to the whole place as being like this.....that's all. However certain aspects can be on par with the first world. There are a few hospitals here that are as good as any in the West.Dentists too. And certain things about society in general here are better than in the West.

People just tend to harp on about the negative aspects.......

It is certainly relevant to me. I remember the coup and all the violence in Cambodia somewhat recently when all the happily settled expats fled the country and most did not return.

I hope that it does not happen here, but between the red shirts and the yellow shirts and a lot of other possibilities many of us are sitting on a powder keg and just hoping for the best.

So Ulysses....if there IS a coup and Thailand turns to <deleted> like you are predicting and you are caught up in the middle of it and need to flee and lose everything, who's fault would that be?

1) Thai society for not being the "civilized" society it should be according to your standards? or;

2) Your fault for not planning an "exit stragety" based on your fears and insecurities of living in a third world country?

Either way it's not your fault right? It was all fate! bad luck right?

You need to take responsibilities for yourself and realise that the whole world does not evolve around you.

Isn't Thailand now defined as a Developing Country?

Developing by whose standards?

Complete peace is something that can be enjoyed (for a few fleeting seconds at the most, now and again) when one lives in the present moment in the present place wherever that place or moment may be. It is not important. It's a feeling, right?

To enjoy peace on peace's terms you shouldn't measure it by what could happen. If one entertains the idea of civil war or financial ruin then they can never be at peace as peace does not understand such terms to measure it by. It doesn't matter if you are far away from war or percived threats or have lots of money or none at all. When you start thinking in terms of money and war you will never be at peace. Sure plan ahead, but don't live in fear of what may or may not happen.

I don't know who defines these things. But I can assure you that Thailand is no longer classified as a Third World country.

Thank you for that, aeolion, I'm all refreshed and challenged once again by your unique point of view. It sounds very reasonable. Must be time to up my medication .......

Well, I live in complete and utter peace. My wife is an absolute diamond and if you offered me a billion in exchange I would say no (zimbabwee dollars :D , a joke ok), , we are truly in love. I have two children that I would not swap for 100 Billion dollars. My house is almost perfect, my business is fantastic and I absolutely adore Thailand and the life we have here. I don't give a rats ass what happens here, I will stand my ground with my family around me and we will live the life we want to live. Even my wife says if the world fell apart as long as we have some land to grow some food then we would be happy together if we never saw anyone else.

The ONLY thing I occasionally miss is a good intellectual conversation in my own language, but thats it. If I dont like whats going on in Thailand then i turn the news off, because you know it never ever effects me where I live. I have a 'special place' with four years worth of food for 8 people, a deep water well with manual purification system and grain and seeds to grow what we need (and 4 years to find out how to do it !) so whatever happens me and my family will be provided for. Where should we run? The USA? ...there will be civil war in the next 5-10 years, The UK or Europe? not a chance. We are here, not running and will continue to live in complete and utter peace.

I never have understood all the negativity on here about Thailand and Thai women. I would not swap what I have for anything, period.

By the way Ian Forbes

Is that really necessary? What if someones kids peruse this forum. off topic, off the plot and out of order. IMHO ! rolleyes.gif

I'm not sure what crime Ian Forbes is suposed to have committed, but, you can be sure that there is much worse on the Internet to entertain the kids.

There's always something.

Now that I've got the time, the money and have moved to a tropical island paradise with a little lady to enrich my life, the shark under the lilo again looms large.

Health problems never fully allow the peace sought, at least not until the end.

Eh? Expats fled the country ? Never returned ? Load of nonsense. We were in the middle of it .Sure ,we got evacuated, Not one farang did not come back . Not one. The biggest problem we had was the yellow shirts ,they did their stupid best to stuff up our lives. Now we have a Govt. that gets on well with Cambodia- our problems are over, to the extent that our much loved Cambodian market , returns next week. On Thai soil .Brilliant, We thank you ,Yingluck!! Sitting on a powder keg? _ what a load of ignorant nonsense.

I think Ulysses was referring to problems in Cambodia NOT Thailand. BTW, can you post census info regarding expat numbers prior to and after the Cambodian incident referred to?
