SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) -- Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon, who is known for her roles in movies such as 'Walk the Line', was hit by a car in Santa Monica, California on Wednesday, local authorities said on Thursday.

The accident happened at around 11.15 a.m. local time along Georgia Avenue in Santa Monica when an 84-year-old driver hit Witherspoon after failing to stop at an intersection, police told the Santa Monica Daily Press.

Witherspoon was jogging at the time of the accident and, according to Sergeant Richard Lewis of the Santa Monica Police Department, she was transported to a local hospital. He said she suffered only minor injuries and is reportedly recovering at her home.

The elderly driver has been cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and is cooperating with the investigations without incident.

Witherspoon, 35, of New Orleans, Louisiana, won the Academy Award for Best Actress, along with several other awards such as a Golden Globe and Bafta, for her role as June Carter Cash in 2006s 'Walk the Line,' which is a biographical film of singer/song-writer Johnny Cash. She might be best known for starring in box office hit 'Legally Blonde' in 2001, which catapulted her acting career.
