Son Of London Deputy Mayor Dies After Full Moon Party

The 28-year-old son of the Deputy Major of London has collapsed and died in a £12 a night guest house after attending a wild ‘Full Moon Party’ on the Thai island of Koh Phangan.

Police said here today that Andrew John Lister, 28, son of Edward Lister, the former Tory chief of Wandsworth Council, collapsed while drinking with friends in a guest house on Haad Rin Beach last Monday….the morning after the island’s monthly Full Moon Party.

A police spokesman said: “Witnesses said Andrew John Lister, 28, of British nationality was drinking with four friends in room 315 of the Baan Talay Guest House on Haad Rin Beach when he collapsed. Attempts were made to revive him but they failed. His body was taken to the local hospital. We believe he died of a heart attack. There was no evidence of drugs in the room.”

Police said while there was no evidence of any drug taking a post mortem was being conducted. As Lister collapsed at 6 am it appeared he had been drinking all night.

But sources close to the famly insist that Andrew Lister did not indulge in any excessive behaviour. They believe he died from an undiagnosed medical problem and a post mortem is expected to be carried out in London.

Last night British Embassy officials were arranging for Lister’s body to be flown home. Britain’s consular agent was off island at the time. Results of a local post mortem on Andrew Lister on the nearby island of Koh Samui have not been released.

Koh Phangan is notorious for its all night parties which take place at Haad Rin Beach at every full moon.

Revelers dance all night, drink alcohol out of buckets, and traditionally large amounts of drugs are available.

Attending a ‘Full Moon’ party on Koh Phangan is a ‘rite of passage’ for many young Britons and Europeans on their gap year.

of course it was, we all believe that, don't we?

it sounds a fun place (quote from source article at link)

The police station would be chaotic with desk officers struggling to understand drunken Brits who've been mugged, had possessions stolen or who've been attacked, or trying to trace missing friends.

‘In the cells would be party-goers caught with drugs imprisoned in open cage before being transported into town.

“Private, Samui-based hospitals would set up camp on the beach, dealing with disorientated, dehydrated and drunk party-goers - some vomiting and barely conscious.

“Drunken Brits (from those buckets of cocktails would be wandering into the sea, at risk from drowning.

*****

and that thread needs amending - it suggests that his father is pictured behind bars

A Britt dies in Thailand likely because of his over indulgence and we have to read a story that largely talks negatively about the area of Thailand where he died.

All nations have certain quirks in their culture but is not taking responsibility for ones own actions and/or needing to lay blame on others a common trait among the Britts?

This is nothing to do with cultural quirks.

As the British FCO warns about the dangers of Full Moon parties these warnings should be heeded. But as few people probably check travel advisories it is responsible to include them in a news story.

The Thai authorities are already more than fully aware as they are dealing with the problems first hand.

What are you saying the late Mr. Lister should take responsibility for? It is possible but it is by no means proven that he overindulged. It may be something entirely different.

That Nisa needs to wind his/her neck in. Its an Englishman's right to leave this world pissed. Its in the Magna Carta!. Myself, a Bing Crosby will do me just fine.

RIP Lister.

Indeed. The article says he died the night after the Full Moon Party, and it is not even clear that drugs, or his behaviour or consumption during the party, had anything to do with it. RIP.

Not sure why the Full Moon Party is mentioned in such detail, suggesting that it is the party's fault somehow... Of course, what I heard about it is Sodom and Ghomorra, but nobody is forced to attend or iindulge, it's all voluntary. The dangers are well known. Other people like to put themselves into other dangerous situations, such as attempting to climb Mount Everest, or jumping with their motorbikes over 12 burning cars, or going into a jungle were nobody can protect them from wild animals. Other young people drink 24 hours a day at Ballermann beach of Mallorca. I believe everybody has the right to choose their own dangerous situations.

When reading the article I had a bit of a feeling that the author was seizing this unfortunate death as a means to condemn Thailand somehow by putting the blame on the party.

Seems it was the morning after the party???? That article describes a pretty crazy scene...which I'm sure is about how it is.

Most people stay out all night drinking at the party. There is even after parties that start on the morning of the day after.

Nobody is pouring alcohol down the party-goers throats or forcing them to attend. Its called personal responsibility for one's own behavior.

And nobody really knows why this young man died, it could have been many things, including the possibility of natural causes. Until there is evidence, needless speculation as to cause of death can only contribute to the pain of the family if they find this thread. It's a sad thing for his family, and they must feel the loss terribly.

Yes, you are right, I got this wrong. I had thought it was a day later, my mistake.

Please hold your condemnations until the complete autopsy is performed in the UK. Sometimes people are born with an undiagnosed phsyical defect. The heart just stops, an aorta explodes, etc.

Although unforseen, it is expected that in a given population, people will die as a result of undiagnosed physical defects. Perhaps a state of fatigue or a high blood alcohol level may have been contributing factors, but if its a bad heart, whether it was in Thailand, or on an aeroplane or whilst sitting on the loo, when the heart stops, it stops. One only has a certain amount of time before the muscle stops working.

The one that gave them the opportunity to make money out of it.

Unless you believed he was raped or mugged or was attacked by gangs, why in the world bring this into the story?

There is no indication what-so-ever that this has anything to do with needing or having been aware of a travel advisory unless the Brits feel a need to alert all adult Britts that all night partying and indulging is dangerous in every place in the universe. If he died from over indulgence then he could have and likely would have done this anywhere that parties happen. If he died from natural causes, again nothing to do with Thailand. Point is that there is absolutely no reason to believe Thailand had anything to do with his death and going beyond talking about this being a party spot and the night of a full moon party that gets pretty wild is absolutely irrelevant.

Regardless, very sad to hear anyone die so young.

Edit: Also posting an outdated picture of a guy with a sign selling drugs outside a shop and then stating at the end of the article this isn't the case anymore is also a very strange thing to do and absolutely irrelevant to this person's death.

Extreme excess of a physical behavior can have dire consequences, including death. The age of the deceased would indicate that he was old/experienced enough to know his physical limit. Sometimes we may be exposed to something that is beyond our experience or knowledge. Some people have a undetected physical situation that can rear its ugly head at any time. The possibilities are many, doubt that any follow up info from the Island will be made public. Supposition seems to be more the norm than real info.

RIP to the deceased and condolences to the family/friends.

It would seem this is more of a farang past time but certainly some Thais also enjoy partying hard.

I'd say it is more likely that they had a nightcap at the hotel before going to sleep.

Exactly...I've been to the full moon party a number of times and indulged in various opportunities and haven't died once. God bless this poor young soul, but as long as there isn't some hidden foul play I can't see how it can be construed as anything but unfortunate.

R.I.P to the young man and condolences for his family

But blaming the Thai or the full moon party is obviously bullshit... IF the young man died from drug abuse or alcohol - as many do - then it is his fault only and there are similar events and places all over the world...

Street Parade in Zurich / Switzerland.... nice and quiet and clean country.... Statistics from this year:

- 500 people treated for alcohol and drug abuse... 100 of them under age

- parties and after hour parties for 24h in a row...

- 50 people caught driving under influence of what ever and loosing their licences

AND... the health department every year sets up special stations where young people can go with their various pills the bought and have them check for content... that is the government stating their defeat in the war against all the small time dealers selling their drugs during this event... they can't fight the dealers so they at least try to help the kids buying the drugs to make sure they consume "clean" drugs...

Amazing Switzerland... Amazing Thailand... Amazing Mallorca... Amazing Cancun.... where you find young people, you find drug and alcohol abuse... that is fact and has nothing to do with Thailand.

And... I remember another article few days ago about the new Thai governments plans for fighting drugs... and did see the comments about "hope the human rights of the dealers will be respected" F*** their human rights. Put them in prison for 5-50 years without possibility for parole or early release...

"no evidence of drugs" .......and the kids (yes, 28 years old is a kid, when he acts so immaturely) - by their own admission, were drinking booze and beer all night. Whomever said 'no evidence of drugs' is an abject idiot or is covering up, big time.

That's like looking at a pond full of fish and saying, "no evidence of living things in this pond."

Maybe he didn't die of alcohol poisoning, but it sure is a likely cause. Though Brits don't recognize 'alcohol poisoning' as a medical condition, as it's so prevalent in their culture, indeed in most cultures, including Thailand's. 'Can't see the forest for the trees' - fits the scenario.

Sorry to hear the kid died, but maybe it's a wake-up call to Brits and Thais and others who drink too much, that alcohol kills. Meanwhile, hemp (which is harmless) is classified as a Class 5 illegal drug and can land you in jail (in the US and Thailand), yet 40% alcohol moonshine is sold in every mom and pop shop in Thailand.

Two lines in a news article hardly constitutes "a story that largely talks negatively about the area of Thailand..."

there have been many deaths from drugs

Occasionally there are fights between tourists and locals and robberies and sexual assaults are also reported each month.

On the mornings after the full moon parties I accompanied the British Honorary Consul. The first question he would ask was: How many rapes do we have today? often attacks from local men, many with reputations for using violence against foreigners. The police station would be chaotic with desk officers struggling to understand drunken Brits who've been mugged, had possessions stolen or who've been attacked, or trying to trace missing friends.

In the cells would be party-goers caught with drugs imprisoned in open cage before being transported into town.

And local predators would be waiting to prey on helpless, intoxicated Brits.

Since 2009, a number of British nationals were victims of serious sexual offencesThere have been incidents where tourists have had their drinks drugged fullmoonpartydrugmenu.gif NB: Since these pictures were taken drugs are no longer available on menus at Haad Rin,

Even a joke can be insulting when directed towards an extremely decent man who does the job on a voluntary basis without pay, helping out many in need and a source of comfort to many in grief.( I refer to the Honorary Consul of course)

Your humour is a little misplaced.
