Hi 'jonoc' how's it going?

As no one's responded I thought I'd say 'Hello'. As far as advice goes, that's easy; until you find your feet, trust no-one, Oh yes.......even westerners, and take what they say with a pinch of salt….Some don't have a pot to piss in, and may try it on.

Thailand is a great place to live, sure there are lots of like minded people you will get on with. But to enjoy living here means going thought a steep learning curve, keep both your feet are on the ground. My tip, (if I was to hand just one out) never talk about what money you have to ANYONE, play everything down, be the 'grey man' bragging in Thailand is never a good idea.

Good luck, I hope you like it here.

Hi Jono

I also live around the Bang-na / Srinakarin area. Don't worry too much about scammers, been here a couple of years and met a couple, just remember the saying, if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably isn't.

As for socialising, I have found this area does not seem to have much of a social scene, there are plenty of bar / restaurant type places but it seems to me that most of the local ex-pats either go into town or stay home . Maybe I drink in the wrong area  although I like it and go out with a couple of friends regularly. It can be boring going into town every weekend.

Having said that there are some good international schools out this way, with plenty of ex-pat teachers , but as thats not my work I never really meet many, apart from those where I live.

The area is fine with plenty to keep you occupied and is a lot cheaper than staying along the Sukhumvit , the main road going into BKK centre, which is where most ex-pats stay and as the extension to the Sky train now reaches past Bang-na , getting into town is not so hard now.

PM me if you want any specific info, especially when you find out where your apartment will be

welcome to Bangkok , you'll enjoy it. :)

If you are already street smart and do not think with the small head, Thailand is pretty easy. If you are very naive, don't trust anybody!

Only 3 things you need to know in thai:

pai ahrb orb nooad - go to a Traditional thai massage

haa galee hai noy - find me a good lady

maang heeya - thank you sir

I'd say basic phrases that you should learn-

Hello - sa-wa-dee-krap (can also be used for goodbye).

Thank you - kob-kun-krap

My name is... - pomme cheu...

I am from New Zealand - pomme ben con New Zealand

Sorry - kor-tod-krap

How are you? - sa-bai-dee-mai-krap

I am fine - sa-bai-dee-krap

I don't understand- mai kow jai krap

I don't want - mai ow krap (very useful is you're continually bugged by touts and sellers on the streets... )

The 'krap' at the end is a word that's just added to make a sentence polite. Women use 'ka'.

I'd suggest picking up a decent guide book like the Rough Guide to Bangkok or the Lonely Planet Bangkok one, as it's pretty useful in terms of explaining basic need-to-know things about Thailand, as well as having a decent amount of information about the area you'll be staying in.

I beg to differ...

The only useful phrase i found to actually save me some buck, or at least give me some bang for the buck is:

mai om, mai tip ! -no suckie suckie, -no tip

some of the thai phrases in the "funny" posts here will get you a salty reply or worse, a punch in the mouth if said to the wrong thai at the wrong time ... avoid!

don't worry about speaking thai initially - just smile at everyone - your first attempts at thai will NOT be understood - even simple things like "where is ...", "how much is ...", etc take a bit of practice.

carry a card or brochure from the apartment building you live in with the name and address of the building on it in thai(+map preferably), and the phone number of reception there - most buildings will supply you with this and if they can't, get them to print a page off with the details to carry with you. you can show it taxi drivers almost none of whom speak english and and if there is any doubt give them your mobile and they can call the building and get directions to there - that way you can go where you like and at least be able to get home.

enjoy the city ....
