Thinking Of Moving Closer To Chumphon Town

I like where I stay on the beach now, but the GF wants a bigger house, slightly cheaper, and closer to Big C. Sunnyville is a decent place, but I have problems with the CAT CDMA reception. I did my own on-site tests and I will probably need an antenna booster of some sort to get EVDO (3G) signal. They do have ToT and 3BB hardlines, which "should" be ok. The antenna thing with CAT is hit or miss, I'd have to contact the office and/or check other user's experiences

I have very good internet quality on the beach overall and I'm nervous about possibly losing that when I move to Sunnyville. Anyone have a second opinion or alternatives?

We`re quite an amiable bunch down here, so making friends shouldn`t be too much of a problem.

The local cable TV is pretty poor - there are only a few english speaking stations but at 400 Baht a month, I suppose you can`t really complain. [Not that it stops me.]

Golf? Search me, I have never played.

Supermarkets? Ocean in the city, Makro, Big C and Tesco Lotus just outside. They have a reasonable selection of western stuff, but nothing to get too excited about.

The nightlife is not exactly Las Vegas, but nor is it Kabul on a wet Tuesday night, either.

Your best bet is to come down for a few days and check it out for yourself. I bet you`ll like it....

OP, I can`t really help you other than to tell you no - one in Sunnyville seems to have any complaints about their broadband. One of the locals uses his to watch live horseracing from Sweden and place bets....

Thanks for the reply, its very hard to find any info on the area,do you live in town or on the beach? What difference in long term rental prices city vs beach,i will be coming down again in november, any rental offices worth checking,or just do a drive around.I am 44,wife 30 and we have young baby, not interested in bg bars, but a good local to watch the football and sitting around with other falangs to see who can tell the tallest stories after a few beers would be ideal.Internet seems to be good enough to live stream,so can get around the lack of english tv

You sound like just the kind of chap who would be happy here. I live in Sunnyville, about 5Kms south of the city. I paid 1,200,000 Baht for `my` bungalow about 7 years ago when the Pound was worth more than toilet paper. They are building more houses now - I don`t know how much they cost, but usually there are places to rent for no more than 5K per month. I have a baby daughter myself, and this is an excellent, safe place to raise her.

If you like a bit of footy [boxing in my case] and just want to watch bits and bobs on TV, the local cable provider will be fine for you. We have Fox `news`, Fox Crime, ITV Granada and Australia Network, plus a few sports channels.

Come down with the family and see what you think.....

ok. The concern was more about CAT CDMA. ran my own tests and it was on 1x the whole time until you got to the main road for sunnyview. But even though the network was picking up EVDO signal, it took another 1.5km closer to town to actually get the evdo speed.

oh well. turns out the lady found a job here near the beach. so while i did look forward to living closer to town, for now maybe will stay where I am. I have accumulated quite a bit of info for both patong and chumphon that others may find useful.
