You could always check out our sponsors. I've personally visited SEE in Chiang Mai and was impressed by their facilities & setup, and I'm not just saying this because I'm a mod!

There are a number of past threads on the subject; search and see. The thing is, nearly no one takes more than one basic level TEFL course- 'cause once you have one, well, that's all you need typically for the entry level job. So it's hard for any one person to compare the actual experience of taking the courses.

There are reasonable arguments in favour of 'standard' certs like CELTA for industry recognition and adult/professional applications; there are just as reasonable arguments in favour of tailored qualifications which focus more on the children, culture and environment in which you will most likely actually be teaching. Different courses have different lengths and costs, and different schools offer different post-qualification support services- some schools will help you find jobs.

Beware of guarantees- there are few guarantees for which you will actually be able to hold businesses accountable here- but some general steps to take to protect yourself:

1. Do your homework, research various options, shop around, don't respond to the immediate hard sell. Ask to see a demo lesson, sit in on a real class, or to see what a student teacher at the school is able to do. Ask for any business license information. If there is any claim to government approval, ask to see support for this claim.

2. Call up a school or two that is or might be hiring and ask them what THEY like to see.

3. There are usually a few jokers in the deck somewhere/somehow, but most of them get fired or go out of business pretty quickly. If a school's been around awhile there's a better chance they're doing something right. So as a rule of thumb, if the school is new and doesn't have much history, it should be a bit cheaper to compensate for that risk.

4. There are a number of known anti-TEFL company nutters who troll the internet; they are specifically why certain rules in this subforum exist. Be aware that such nutters may contact you in an effort to discourage you from taking classes. It's your call; I believe it is not impossible to acquire a TEFLing job without a specific TEFL cert if you can get the school or agency to vouch for you, but if you have no teaching in your background, it could be a daunting and embarrassing prospect to stand in front of 40+ kids and suddenly not know how to make things work... for an hour....

Have fun with it! At least, I hope you do, because if you're planning to spend a year of your life or more this way, there should be something about it worth the experience, right?

Forum members, please do feel free to post your reasonable comments on TEFL courses with which you have experience- but keep in mind the subforum guidelines as you do.

I live in chiang mai.

seetefl is one i will recommend too. The owner there is motivated, and does a good job. I've seen some students' feedback being most positive of the course. I also know the owner through my own work, although not very well, but i do know he does about ten courses a year, and is virtually always full. Word of mouth seems to work for him.

If you want the big pukka original RSA cert, paying full whack, then you can do it at International House somewhere down hang dong way. Search it on the net for prices.

As it happens, i'm a teacher trainer, if that carries any extra weight for your decision-making!
