PM Yingluck's Twitter Account Hacked!

Anudith insists that police have identified who was behind the hacking but has declined to reveal a name to prevent the suspect from escaping.

STOP TALKING.

He's probably just saying that to make the hacker paranoid and afraid... punishment enough, I'd say.

I know, you know and the person who guessed her password hacker knows that if the police had any idea who was behind this, they would of pulled them into the cop shop by now. Trying to play face-saving mind games like this is just adding to their already poor reputation for incompetence.

Her account was not hacked; she had an easy to guess password, and someone guessed it.

That shouldn't be too hard. I can probably make a few guesses myself:

Thai PM stops tweeting pending probe of hacked Twitter account.

image_20111003180141C9724565-BE1D-C7F8-0500BFFD2EA927BC.jpg

BANGKOK, Oct 3 -- Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said Monday that she would temporarily halt communicating via Twitter until the Information and Communication Technology Ministry (ICT) finishes its investigation to find the hacker who discredited her government and policies.

The premier's "@PouYingluck" account on the popular microblogging social network was targeted by an unknown person Sunday morning who denigrated, in eight separate posts (or tweets) her Pheu Thai-led government policies and administration.

The premier said she would let the authorities concerned investigate and evaluate how far the hacker went into her information.

“Some clues have been found,” she said, quoting unnamed ministry officials. “The information will be revealed once the probe is complete.”

Ms Yingluck said she didn’t know the motive behind the hacking but considered it an intrusion of her personal privacy. The prime minister stopped short of saying whether the attack was intended to topple her government.

ICT Minister Anudith Nakornthap earlier said that, according to the initial investigation, the hacker used a mobile phone to hack the premier's twitter account.

Mr Anudith said it was believed the hacker was a Thai national as Thai language comments were tweeted.

Ms Yingluck’s e-mail was hacked to get access to her Twitter account and the hacker changed the passwords for both her email and Twitter accounts.

The ICT minister said the action was considered a crime and violates the Computer Crime Act BE 2550 (2007). Violators could face up to five years in prison and a maximum fine of Bt100,000 (US$3,000).

The premier’s @Pou Yingluck Twitter account was used to spread information related to the premier and only one other person on the team knew her password, the minister said.

The investigation team are gathering evidence to identify the hacker, Mr Anudith said, but he admitted that the hacker may not be found. (MCOT online news

Yesterday the same minister said

"ICT minister Capt. Anudit Nakhontap said he has already assigned the Technology Crime Suppression Division to identify the hacker.

"Now [we] know who is the hacker and whereabouts of where they did it but [we] cannot disclose the details as [we] have to coordinate with police to proceed with an arrest," stated the minister."

So I guess we'll wait a bit more for the details promised ;)

Still wondering about the hacked email address, may be same, wait for more info :)

Phiphidon, (Re: post #45)

From the article link above...

"I tried to distinguish between the role of political party and the people movement. I did not take their stage but protected their rights," he said. "I totally disagreed with their seizure of the Government House and the airports."

He may have disagreed with the government house and airports closures, but didn't hardly do squat about these "terrorist moves" in the legal system

Politicians don't run the legal system - that would be a complete lack of separation on powers.

And neither of those events happened on his watch.

Tawp,

You know as well as I do, that the judicial system is a snails pac... But what WAS actually done with Sondhi and Gen. Dogman re: their closure movements DURING Mark's watch? They could have, like they and many other administrations have on other issues, pressured (re: coerced) the court system in doing something more viable. Vested interests in certain groups perhaps?

Anudith on Sunday claimed the hacker had used a mobile phone application to access PM's account and another app to hide his location.

Really? What exactly are they saying? That the provider has no info regarding what cell-tower he connected via?

Hacked Twitter account shut as ICT Ministry probes violation

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra decided to terminate her Twitter account @PouYingluck after it was hacked on Sunday, ICT Minister Anudith Nakornthap said yesterday.

Anudith said there now was only one social-network channel that Yingluck still uses to communicate with the people, which is her Facebook page under the account Y.Shinawatra.

The information and communications technology minister said authorities had many clues to identify who hacked the PM's Twitter account.

They expected to bring the hacker to justice eventually under the Computer Crime Act 2007, Articles 5, 7, 9, and 14. Anudith said a hacker violating computer laws could face a prison term of not more than five years or a fine of not more than Bt100,000, or both.

"We have asked for information from the Twitter service provider overseas to investigate this case. It is expected we will find out who did it," Anudith said.

He said that personally, he thought the hacker might be a person who does not admire the government's policies rather than one who aims to discredit the government over its information-security protection.

However, Anudith said the government had not set up a "special dedicated team" to oversee investigation of this case, but would treat it as any other computer crime.

He said this hacker stole the Yingluck's e-mail password and then passed it through the PM's Twitter account to change the passwords of both accounts.

"We acknowledge the hacker did it over the mobile-phone network, and we are investigating this and will finalise which mobile network."

He added that authorities had not overlooked investigation of the internal staff, since apart from the prime minister herself, there are team members familiar with the password.

Anudith said any case against an accused hacker would depend on evidence.

The minister said it was not surprising that the Twitter account had been hacked; even US President Barack Obama's account had been hacked two years ago. He urged other social networkers with a similar problem to alert the authorities.

The government will use this case to move forward the draft of its new computer-crime legislation, which is now with the ICT Ministry. The ministry will set up a committee to revise the draft again, since there are issues still needing adjustment.

The ICT minister said this hacker case would affect the budget allocation for IT security, giving it more priority than in the past.

The ICT minister said this hacker case would affect the budget allocation for IT security, giving it more priority than in the past.

So it was an internal job then.

 staggeringly plausible.

Just look towards the Culture Minister, who will have lost funds through diversion to the ICT Minister, to hatch a similar issue that would be similarly described as an effort to "topple the government" and thereby advocate more budget allocation for her ministry.

So it's Monday now, where is the smart guy with his announcement of the winner.

And on Monday, here's that smart guy again... :D:lol:

ICT minister also says he wouldn't publicly identify the twitter hacker now for fear of ruining the case.

Doesn't this sound so familiar.

We have video evidence about this and that and make it public on this or that date. Then when the date comes they turn quiet at once. Wouldn't surprise me if she posted the tweets herself as she is really the brightest light in the Shinawatra stable.

Traditionally the next move will be to announce, in all seriousness, that the hacker's name begins with an "S", just to show that the poo-yais are still fully-in-control & not totally-clueless.

Complaining? I'm not complaining.

It's stupid to have a "team" with passwords to seemingly important (to her, anyway) accounts.

Lack of accountability over these accounts has apparently led to these accounts being hijacked and hurtful truths have been published on it, which then makes that original account holder appear careless and stupid.

If this has become one of her main methods of communicating with the entire nation and world, due diligence and care should be extended to protect it.... otherwise, some hurtful truths could get published on it.

it sounded to me like you were complaining about 'the stupidity' of it

anyway, is this, ' "team" of assistants with your passwords' - your quote - taken from the line in the article - 'there are team members familiar with the password' ?

because, imho, the phrasing conjures up two different images

so i compared it to barrack obama, simply to show that this is not uncommon for busy politicians and you tried to shoot it down by implying that i was comparing their power and workload... and your response seemed to be implying that she's not busy/powerful enough to warrant this feat.

so you think this is stupid in principal, and not personally against her?

or is it just her and it's fine for other politicians to do?

also you're saying "It's stupid to have a "team" with passwords to seemingly important (to her, anyway) accounts"

do you know they have 'passwords' and to various 'accounts', or is it just her twitter?

just a side note, getting into a twitter account isn't exactly a breakthough for the hacking community...

I was commenting on the stupidity of her actions, not complaining.

There were comments in various articles from the ICT ministry that apparently Yingluck isn't the only one with knowledge of her passwords.

If there are comments from other countries' ICT ministries that their leaders, who communicate on such networks, share their passwords with others, it might be worth noting, but we haven't thus far and so we can focus on Thailand in this thread.

Also from various articles, we have garnered that the Prime Minister's email, Twitter, and Facebook accounts have been compromised, presumably using the same method (knowing the passwords) for all three. It's also possible that once her email account was hacked, the other passwords to the Twitter and Facebook accounts could be found in emails, if she was stupid enough to leave such information in her account.

Yes, I am aware it's no great achievement to "hack" into a Twitter account... it's especially easy if one has the account password.

you still don't know what passwords other people have though, could you link me to one of those articles from the ICT ministry please?

the reason i chose barrack obama is because we know he shares his twitter password with others

if we speculated that it's just for the twitter account that she shares the password on, then do you think it's stupid for any politician to do this or if it's just her actions that you find stupid?

as for your second last paragraph... i'm sure you're aware that even if her email account was completely clear with nothing in it, you or i could obtain her twitter and facebook passwords from it

so your "if she was stupid enough to leave such information in her account" comment is a moot point.

and just to be clear, you were never hinting that she's not busy enough to need members of staff to sometimes maintain/moderate any of her social networking pages, were you?

PM’s profile hacker known, might be caught in 1-2 days

BANGKOK, 4 October 2011 (NNT) – The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has identified the hacker of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s Twitter account, expecting the arrest to be made in 1-2 days.

After the Twitter page of Prime Minister Yingluck was hacked by an unknown person, ICT Minister Group Captain Anudith Nakornthap announced that the identity of the culprit had been revealed through many pieces of evidence. The individual is believed to be residing within a Bangkok area and to have committed the act by himself.

The Minister stated that the information acquired so far was sufficient for the arrest to be conducted by the police within a day or two, after which the suspect would have to be questioned whether there were others involved.

However, Gp Capt Anudith assured that the ICT Ministry was investigating the case carefully in order to avoid misidentification.

excerpts from:

Thai prime minister's Twitter account was hacked

Once the incident was realised Twitter temporarily suspended the account, which has close to 400,000 followers. As of the time of writing the account remains unavailable.

According to Anudith Nakornthap, the Thai minister for information, communication and technology, Yingluck's Twitter account was compromised after the hacker first gained access to her email, changing her Twitter password with the password reset feature.

This suggests that she was not using the same password for both services, a common reason for Twitter hijackings, but it suggests that the password she used for her email account was not secure enough.
