yep subsidise potatoes, then we get cheaper chips and can afford the fat tax incurred.....

In your case, reeducation camp would be in order.

Yep a couple of months at least, will I get a fat tax rebate for good behavior?

Sadly true for many these days....a fat tax is a great idea in my opinion...only if the revenue is used to properly offer an alternative. Cheap veggies? yeah its an option but so is free cooking classes and targeting youngsters....that's where any programme should start.

If I buy my veggies and fry them at home, how will they levy the tax except by taxing the oil? and if I use the fat drained from my sausages I will have paid fat tax on it at the initial purchase.....

How about a "gay tax," since homosexuals are the primary AIDS vector? The money raised could be used for the expensive AIDS treatments now falling on the backs of taxpayers.

Good point. How about subsidized vegetables?

This has actually been discussed a lot in Denmark, and is still on the table. VAT in Denmark is 25% on everything (except public services), and several politicians have argued that 'healthy food' should face a lower VAT.

I am not convinced that even if financial incentives made people eat less "fat" that fat people would actually lose much fat. There is so much more to the reasons people are obese than fat intake. I still think the social experiment is interesting, just not in my country, ha ha.

I'd like to see something more positive rather than this punitive nonsense. How about free gyms and better sports facilities with swimming pools available free as well late into the evening and heated if possible.

Let the fat tax pay for it...isn't that what this is all about?

Edit: I suppose what I'm saying is that it is a cultural issue..if there was a gym on every street people would be more inclined to use it...for example I mean not literally...

The city I come from in Denmark, have tried free fitness facilities, but it never really worked as far as i know. They built these pavilions around attractive running routes, but no one used them. The problem is also that they are 'open air' because when they wanted to built indoor gyms, all the private gyms protested. So the free facilities can only be used April - October.

Am I the only one to think this is totalitarian and totally unacceptable?

Count yourself lucky that you don't live in Australia where they are about to impose a Carbon Tax.

I Denmark they already have a CO2 tax. Think Denmark is one of the most taxed countries in the world, if not THE most.

Sometimes I'm surprised that hey haven't found a way to tax oxygen yet!

How about a bigot tax?

Considering its population, Canada is a very highly taxed country. Most reasonable people don't mind paying taxes for benefits received: highways, medical, schooling, protection, etc. but we REALLY hate the waste of our tax dollars. It has been calculated that Canadians work for 7 months of the year just to pay all the taxes. We have an annual tax free day and it usually arrives near the end of July. Any person can justify just about anything if they set their minds to it, but common sense tells us when things are too much. It doen't make any sense to spend $100 to get $10 in value, but that is what happens with most governing bodies. The politicians try to justify any little expense for themselves when it comes out of the public's funds.

At least in Denmark, taxes are no longer reasonable. It is still the highest taxed country in the world, but over the last decade, the quality of the public sector have fallen dramatically. The education system, healthcare system etc, are no longer world class.

Indonesia taxes palm oil

http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/business/nations-refined-palm-oil-tax-redraws-export-landscape/464748

From wikipedia

"Palm oil, palm kernel oil and coconut oil are three of the few highly saturated vegetable fats."

So not the first fat tax.

Edit: I thought he said "fart tax" - now I'm in trouble, I thought. How are we going to keep the home fires burning without domestic gas? I'll need to change my diet...
