Anyone able to recommend best place to buy a bicycle in Pattaya or Rayong?

I haven't cycled for many years, last time was using a Marin Bear Valley, which was great. I'm probably after something similar again, but a less expensive version. Because I am so out of touch with the current models any advice or info appreciated. I have looked at a cycle shop on road leading down from Sukhumvit to Jomtien (close to Go-Kart tracks), but that is all so far ... apart from Tesco/Lotus! I don't have a hard and fast budget, need to see what is available, but I suppose it will be anything from 5,000 to 15,000 baht ... will be buying one for myself and one for my g/f. Want to use primarily on road, rural not city, and some off road use, but not heavy duty crag hopping! I do not like the look of the split rear stem bikes, so conventional frame is one requirement. Tyres are probably best as cross use, any particular make/type less likely to puncture? How many gears, see that some models have 24 speed, I started life on 3 so anything above that is luxury, also there is a limit to how many one can usefully need for normal use ... and I believe in pushing harder to make your legs stronger, rather than trying to make it as easy as possible ... mind you, as I haven't pedalled for a while I suspect that view could change :-)

Have seen a few different makes; Trek I am familiar with and is obviously a good brand, what about Jamis (?) and others? I'd like one that is not going to collapse after a few months and guess this rules out the cheap supermarket versions. Also what is the best security lock, compromise between weight and strength, that I'd be advised to get? We'll be getting bikes for several reasons; to get fitter, see more of countryside and interact with locals, fuel economy ... offset the cost and environmental impact of also using a 4x4. Finally like to be able to keep up with my brother for more than a few metres, having recently sat on rear of tandem with him I realised how out of condition I am - a few months ago he cycled/raced some 1400km London/Edinburgh/London!

There's a pretty good shop in Map Ta Phut, on Sukumvit Road. Coming from Ban Chang on the right hand side.

Can you give more detailed description, I tried to find it but was unsuccessful, maybe because I'm unfamiliar with Map Ta Phut!

I drove out of Banchang on Sukhumvit towards Rayong, past the traffic lights several kms later at first junction for MTP Ind Estate, up and over the elevated section, down into what I assume is MTP town, a collection of shops etc concentrated over a km or two, then out the other end. Guess I'd gone just over half way to Rayong, did I go far enough? I couldn't see any cycle shop on left along the Sukhumvit main road as I returned towards Banchang.

Thanks.

patrickq,

give Sattahip a try!

The building in front of the Shell-servicestation, Sukumvit, direction from Rayong to Pattaya has a small, nice cycleshop in it, not before 11:oo am! They also have trek or meridian; reasonable prices!

Thanks for that patex, I'll get along in next few days. I managed to find the other shop, at least I guess it was the same one ... needed to go further than I did, just on outskirts of Rayong. Called Bicycles Land (Tel: 038 808373), nice little shop.

Can I renew this old thread?

My doctor has informed me I should get away from my PC more(TV) and the easy chair in front of the Telly and get more exercise.

The bike shops mentioned here in Rayong/Maptaput and Sattahip,,,,,,,are they still there?

Does anyone know of others in the Banchang area for a decent pedal machine?

Pattaya: Theprasit Road. Well down on the right after the Green Tree turning. It's on a corner and run by couple [him and her]. She speaks good English and he's a good mechanic.

The best place is in Sri Acha. There's a couple. One on the main drag near a petrol station as you head out of town - Robinson's on your left, then a hospital turning, lights, petrol Station [Esso?] The other is called 'T's' and is in the small sois near to Robinsons - sort behind it next to a small beer loading / unloading shop.

Failing all that treat yourself to Probike Bankok.

Longball,

from what I can tell there is an amazing looking bike shop in Rayong running on the road running parallel to the Sukumvit, almost directly behind the market there.

The road name is rat-bum-rung,I would go past LT to the u turn and cross over the opposite road and drive straight on,well slightly left and at the end turn right and its about 200 metres on the left hand side( approx)

There is a bike shop in Rayong named Bicycles Land. A little expensive but very good bikes of different makes.
