Heavy rain forecast for flood-hit Thailand: UN

GENEVA, October 28, 2011 (AFP) - Heavy rain is expected on the east coast of southern Thailand until the end of the week, the UN weather agency said Friday.

"The moderate northeast monsoon prevails over southern Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand throughout the period," said the World Meteorological Organisation.

"Abundant rainfall is likely over the southern Thailand east coast. Especially in 28 to 30 October, isolated heavy to very heavy rain is expected in Chumphon southward," it added.

"Windwave in the Gulf of Thailand is about two metres high during the period," it said.

The country would also face "above average rainfall" over the next three months, added the WMO.

"In October and November, there is high probability that the tropical cyclones in the Western North Pacific Ocean or the South China Sea would move through eastern and southern parts of Thailand.

"Therefore, people should beware of natural disaster and follow the weather news," it added.

Parts of Thailand have been under water for weeks. The floods, the worst in decades, have forced thousands of inundated factories to shut down, putting more than half a million people temporarily out of work.

Looking likely Boater, here we go again! Pretty heavy rain here at Donsak over last week, no floods yet but a lot of heavy pooling

It is quite normal to have heavy rain down in Chumphon, Surat Thani, etc. this time of year. It is an entirely different region and is not related to the current flooding in and around Bangkok. Crap news reporting that will just keep people scared of coming here.

It would be really nice to know on what basis this has been said. La Nina, El Nino? Heated/cooled sea waters around the SE-Asia?

And furthermore. Was it ment to be 'next three days' and not 'next three months'.

Well there is a mighty thunderstorm brewing in the northeast of bangkok- 0 wind at the moment so I guess it will hit in a couple of hours.

I see the clouds as well. Very positive that many parts of Bangkok will see rain between 19:00- 21:00.

I can't remember who said it but I heard about 3 months ago that this was La Nina year and it would be a heavier and longer than usual rainy season.

Exactly. North-eastern monsoon started which means plenty of rain in the South, especially for the eastern coast, which is normal for this time of year. The South will see even more rain when temperatures go below 30 degrees during the day in the Central part of Thailand.

Wouldn't it have been better to use a more accurate column heading such as Heavy rain forecast "for the south of" flood-hit Thailand: UN? Just a thought.

Hardly any rain here in Samui today & the forecast for next week, chance of rain.

What is this, the crossroads of WaterHell? Not enough we have high tides and floods, but now it starts to ran heavily. Just what I needed to tip the balance of water out in the street and flood my house.

I feel for you guys, what we had here in Samui in March is insignificant to what you are experiencing.

You'll get plenty of rain on Samui during the next week and following month that you won't be happy when it starts flooding. Samui gets huge amount of rainfall during November, just wait and see.

Define "better". It was certainly better this way, if the purpose is to sell news.

<snipped unreadable stuff ... maybe you need to paste into Notepad before you put it in a post>

Footnote Bangkok isn't going to flood......

Bangkok is flooding. Just not the central part ... yet.

But an example of what might happen is what happened at Suk Soi 48 & 50. A collapsed barrier will flood an area quite quickly.

Here is a little help lotf - we all need a helping hand sometimes:

If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,

if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

------ Footnote Bangkok isn't going to flood......

Pay It Forward!

Thank you for pointing the obvious, just stating not as bad as it usually is this time of year.

Thanks for sharing - it's a favourite.

Here's the full poem, "If" by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,

Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,

And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;

If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with triumph and disaster

And treat those two imposters just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,

And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breath a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;

If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

Well, one of the most reliable sources for weather that I've found is Wing Guru and it shows it being dry in Phuket for the next week.

I don't have any respect for the UN already. Putting out bad information should be left to the regular media. Just like the media-generated SARS hysteria and Bird Flu hysteria that amounted to almost nothing (certainly not a pandemic as predicted), this speculative journalism is getting very, very old.

Absolutely no forecast is accurate for Samui - not on a regular basis anyway.

Yes, certainly, you don't have to be a meteorologist to forecast that in the Rainy season it's going to rain.

But Samui has it's own micro-climate due to the mountain - there can be a torrential downpour in the Chaweng area which suddenly cuts off at Bo Phut etc. etc.

I've stopped bothering with checking forecasts - they seem to be wrong here around 70% of the time, depending what part of the island you're on.

Its great to be right shame TV posters are quick to criticize and doubt but very slow to praise and say well done you were right all along nevermind that's Human nature I suppose as is turning into sheep and believing prophets of doom I'd have expected that from poorly educated third worlders but not from Farrang
