Pattaya Police Checkpoint leads to drug-related arrests

PATTAYA: -- Pattaya Police are aware that thousands of flood victims converging on Pattaya could also lead to an increase in criminal activity and for this reason regular late-night checkpoints have been set-up around the city to filter-out wrongdoers. We joined Police Colonel Nantawoot, the Pattaya Police Chief at a checkpoint in the early hours of Saturday on the Sukhumvit Road in Central Pattaya. Four men were arrested after they failed urine tests and two other men were arrested following a brief chase as they failed to stop at the Checkpoint. It was determined they had recently ingested Methamphetamine but were not found to be in possession of drugs and also failed urine tests conducted at the roadside. The Colonel also had a unique punishment for motorbike drivers who were not wearing their safety helmets. They were ordered to complete 200 squats instead of paying a fine at the Police Station.

But also possibly more effective than the B200 fine... Quite amusing really, we had to perform squats in P.E. at school - its hardly inhumane and not in the same bracket as lashes and caning - I suspect the offenders were given the option at 1 baht per squat !
