Tap Water Quality Generally?

Recommended Posts

How is the tap water quality in the various districts of BKK? I am most interested in Patumwan since we are planning to return this weekend. Can anyone there report on his water quality, good or bad? How about bottled water availability?

bangna where I live, the water seems ok, but my staff are complaining about their homes... yellowish water, some even have had itchy skin the last couple of days.. I feel bad for them really

I live in Sukhumvit/Onnut.

The tap water is still ok, not colored, but the chlorine smell and taste gets stronger by the day.

Bottled water is becoming increasingly hard to find. Unless you can afford Evian or Vittel.

And I believe it's gonna get worse in the weeks to come.

Tesco and Big C at On Nut both have bottled water in this morning plenty of stock priced at 40 baht for about litre and a half size shelves also well stocked this morning.

My tap water is still clear, but tastes bad even after being filtered. Not bad enough to switch to my supply of bottled water though, things might get worse. Bottled water hard to find, can find some at small stores sometimes but 7-11 usually has nothing unless you are lucky enough to go right after they get resupplied.

Below is real-time check on chlorine content and clarity of Bangkok water at various stations.

I found this link in the other thread on the subject. Thanks. Very interesting. Do you know how to interpret the residual chlorine and turbidity numbers? What are the acceptable ranges for bathing use?

I have never seen limits for bathing, guess that there probably are some guide lines somewhere. However there are guidelines for drinking water....just google something like 'residule chlorine levels in tap water' or turbidity levels and you will get a good teachin.

However the chlorine residules, where measured, will not be the same as where used. Free chlorine levels reduce throughout the delivery pipework and more importantly water left in a storage tank can loose all its free chlorine. Also I wonder how accurate is the online measurement system, how good or how often is it calibrated.

However nice to see quite some excess chlorine in various parts of the system.

Here is a bit of light reading .... http://water.me.vccs.edu/courses/ENV115/lesson16.htm

Unless a warning is issued (as it was for a brief period in Thronburi) water should meet standards for drinking so bathing should not be a problem if not an allergy to chlorine (which is often on high side now). From brief reading seems about .50 is target most countries and at 2.0 the smell becomes rather strong but not harmful. For clarity the lower the better.

That link to the realtime chlorine and turbs is interesting. I'm a water treatment operator for the city of Los Angeles. Been meaning to test the water in Bkk and Lamphun when I go there but never got around to it.

I'd be interested in checking out some of the water treatment plants there.

Great link. Thank you.

I'm in Pathumwan and tap water still seems OK, I can't notice any particular color or smell. Didn't try to drink it though, I have a filter so I usually drink out of that.
