Led by Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan, authorities are cracking down on what they term 'nominee-owned companies' and dodgy imports, aiming to shield local industries and promote fair play. Thailand's Deputy Commerce Minister Napintorn Srisunpang highlighted that these long-standing issues lingered due to outdated legal frameworks. The investigation reveals an alarming trend where foreign entities are allegedly bypassing the Foreign Business Act by using Thai nominees. Many such firms, especially in the lucrative sectors of tourism, e-commerce, and real estate, are accused of trafficking in products below standard. In over nine months, the Commerce Ministry reported more than 39,000 cases linked to flimsy imports or firms employing Thai proxies, causing losses estimated at around 2 billion Baht. Consequently, authorities have purged approximately 10,000 goods from digital marketplaces. Moreover, a committee spearheaded by Minister Pichai identified 857 nominee-run companies causing the treasury to bleed approximately 15 billion Baht. To curb these practices, a proposal is on the table for stricter penalties under the Foreign Business Act. Suggestions include heavier punishments for violators, potentially leading to the confiscation of assets. The planned amendments are geared towards offering a robust legal deterrent against exploiting legal loopholes. This development underscores the Thai government's commitment to clean up business practices, maintaining a fair economic environment. Crime Gunman Armed with Rifle & Handgun Attacks Home in Kanchanaburi

Police have identified the gunman involved in a chilling armed attack on a private residence in Kanchanaburi province, in what authorities believe is linked to a dispute over the smuggling of illegal migrant workers. The suspect remains at large after failing to respond to a police summons. CCTV footage from a home in Soi Dong Sak, in Wang Ka village, Sangkhlaburi district, shows a man wearing a pink head covering concealing his identity, approaching the house with both a rifle and a handgun. At around 22:15 on 15 May, the man can be seen sneaking across the road and entering the garage area of the property. He attempts to fire the rifle, but it jams. He then draws the handgun and fires a shot toward an individual in a green shirt sitting inside the house. The bullet narrowly misses, and the suspect flees on foot moments later. The homeowner confirmed to reporters on 21 May that he and others had been sitting at the centre table in the house when the gunman appeared. Fortunately, no one was injured in the attack. According to Pol. Col. Santi Pitaksakul, superintendent of Sangkhlaburi Police Station, the suspect has been identified as a man named Mr O, a former army conscript who previously worked with individuals associated with the household. The motive, investigators believe, stems from retaliation. One of the targeted individuals had been providing authorities with intelligence on local human trafficking operations, which led to multiple arrests, one of whom was a relative of the gunman. Police have since issued a summons for Mr O, but he has yet to present himself for questioning. Investigators are now pursuing the suspect with the assistance of local units, and efforts are underway to bring him into custody for further interrogation and prosecution. This incident has intensified concerns over the dangers faced by whistleblowers and informants involved in exposing illegal border trafficking in the western provinces.
