Hong Kong - The Nation has won the Gold Medal for Best in Mobile Media Award 2011 from the World Association of Newspapers and Ifra, the research and service organisation for the news publishing industry.

The award was announced last night at a gathering of hundreds of publishers and industry members at the ShangriLa Hotel, Hong Kong, said The Nation's digital project manager, Detchana KasikornUdompaisan.

The award recognised The Nation's breakingnews apps for the iPhone, as well as some exclusive content.

"We were the first Thai publisher to produce an array of apps for news, information and lifestyle use on the iPhone [and later iPad and Android]. We are pleased to receive this international recognition on behalf of Thailand," said Detchana.

Download numbers for some of The Nation's apps have been impressive, including 190,000 for Nation News, 24,000 for The Nation Exclusive, a paid site, and 140,000 for Thai Cooking.

With over 5 billion subscribers worldwide, mobile is the most widely utilised media channel in the world.

This award category from WAN/Ifra honours the best and most innovative services offered by news publishers on a mobile platform. It can consist of any kind of service (news, lifestyle, entertainment, utilities, etc). The jury evaluated the quality and originality of the services offered; ease of registration, access and navigation; and coherence of the content on offer with the publication's mission and brand.

More than 40 media companies from 15 countries across Asia participated in this year's competition.

The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers, or WANIfra, is a global press organisation representing more than 18,000 publications, 15,000 online sites and over 3,000 companies in more than 120 countries. The two organisations have a 110-year history between them as the global representatives of the world's press.

The Nation submitted the mobile apps through Nation News Network Co.
