Iphone Sim - Which Is Best For Use In Chiang Mai

Featured Replies

Hi, i will be in chiang mai for 3 months, is true sim any good? i’ve heard people on here say it’s good for unlimited data, can i make a few local calls and send a few texts too on that package? do i just buy extra top up on top of the 599 baht (i think?) to do so? is it good coverage? can i tether on it? or are there any better choices? do i go to kad suan keow to get one?

Thanks in advance

Emma

Which version of the iPhone do you have?

Truemove (H) operates 3G in Chiang Mai on 850 Mhz while AIS/One-2-Call operate 3G on 900 Mhz there. Depending on your model your options may be limited.

Additionally TrueMove is moving 3G service to the TrueMove H brand. Not sure where that process might be now. TrueMove H is currently post-paid only.

I have Truemove H... On an IPhone 4 (599/month and the speed is very good)

Truemove H allows tethering

http://www.truemove-h.com/helpsupport_apnsettings.aspx#info-product1

Truemove H is postpaid (But they have no long term commitment rules - just month to month)

You can also just buy a Truemove sim at any Big C/Lotus or Mall for 49 baht to try out first

(I would recommend their "Intersim")... with that you can make 1 baht a minute calls Internationally (Prefix 00600)

http://www.truemove.com/en/Inter-SIM-Prepay.rails

Once you have this set up you can add data plans by sending a text message

(Make sure your phone is topped up with enough money to pay for the chosen plan)

I would recommend starting with the 199 baht 50 hour plan (The 1st 10 hour 3G)

http://www.truemove.com/en/wifi-edge-gprs-package.htm

The problem you will find with any time based plan is that the IPhone really needs to CONSTANTLY connect to the internet so your time will be gobbled up, usually in the middle of the night, unless you are real good about turning off the data option on your phone...

As to reception/speed: As they say it is a matter of location location location...

Hi, doesn’t airplane mode switch everything off? thanks for the info, so for the post pay how do they get your money if you have no thai bank account? will this still be a suitable option for me? what is the best option if i can’t do the post pay? don’t like the sound of the 50 hour plan, i really want unlimited data with tethering if possible? are the people at the phone area’s in the malls helpful when it comes to all these questions, or is it lost in translation? thanks x

As your phone supports both 850 Mhz and 900 Mhz 3G your options remain AIS/One-2-Call or Truemove (H).

Maybe best to wait until you get to Chiang Mai and sort out the possible options?

One-2-Call has 799 baht/30 day pre-paid package: http://www.ais.co.th/mobileinternet/en/internet-package/

It's not clear to me when TrueMove stops offering pre-paid 3G, when TrueMove H might start offering pre-paid services, or if you can get TrueMove H for 3 months.

AFAIK there are no tethering limitations here like AT&T in the U.S.A. I have tethered an Android phone here on AIS/One-2-Call, Truemove and DTAC/Happy.
