Suicide car bomber targets Iraqi Parliament building, several injured

BAGHDAD, IRAQ (BNO NEWS) -- Several people were injured on Monday when a suicide car bomber targeted a building of the Iraqi Parliament inside the so-called Green Zone in Baghdad, police said on Tuesday.

Officials said the car being driven by the suicide bomber was blocked by a military hummer before he was able to detonate his explosives. As a result, only the assailant was killed and damage to the surrounding area was fairly limited.

A police spokesman said Member of Parliament (MP) Muayad al-Tayib was injured, as well as a small number of guards nearby. However, none of them were believed to be seriously injured.

The Green Zone in central Baghdad is comprised of Iraqi government buildings and several major embassies in addition to U.S. interests. It is often called the safest place in Iraq due to its extreme security, even though insurgents regularly try to attack the area.
