Ok. Heres the story and this is totally TRUE! No bullshit. Just a warning. We hear about terrible things happening to people now and again. Though it does happen in other countries. But a mate of mine in his forties had been out drinking with some other mates(hes from Norway and has his own business here. NOt a tourist). Anyway he was out drinking and then they went for a meal and a few more drinks. So after a while he decides to go home. What happens in between is a bit cloudy. Anyway the next day. No one can get hold of him. Phonecalls, no aswer both at home and mobile. His wife phoned from Norway to say she cant get hold of him and he hasnt phoned that day. Very unusual. So one of the boys wife phones his apartments and tell the staff to go and check. They go to his room and can hear the TV on. By this time my other mate is on his way there. They get a spare key from the staff and let themselves in. My mate from Norway is passed out on the floor just behind the door. Hes concious but cant teally move much. So they take him to hospital. From what we can gather. He met some other guy from Norway. The next thing he remembers is lying on his floor and unable to move. He remembers seeing shadows moving around and talking. As i said he could nt move. Anyway they took his laptop, mobile, some money and EVEN his wedding ring from his finger. Bastards. Hes on the mend now. But just thought i'd post this as a warning for some of those that have heard the stories and said. It wont happen to me. My mate is a very sensible man. He does like a beer. But a few of the boys think that he must have known this guy. He cant remember alot. But just bits and pices. So guys/girls. Be careful out there and dont take drinks from strangers. Even some people you think you know could ###### you over.

Gutted for yer man there Jock, glad to hear he's on the mend.

Nice one for making others aware too, it is far too easy to trust after a few beers. Newbies, have loads of fun just beware.

Jock;

I am not taking the p1ss, but I was talking to a member of TV today on MSN who told me a similar thing, and it looks like its the current mode of operation.

Can I advise everyone here

Please tell them to open the bottles in front of you and then give the neck of the bottle a good wipe.

I would say something like:

Phom mai yark quwart burt krup. . .. Burt quart maa nee na krup . .kao jai mai na krup phom

Please correct me if I am wrong - but it means I don't want an open bottle - open the bottle here please - do you understand ?

There is too much of this oing on not to start to take attention.

Someone tried this on me, while I was still a druguser.

Rather then passing out, I got very talkative and was surprised my 'new friends' didn't appreciate it! :o It didn't come to my mind to invite them around to my place, -lucky, I guess.

Just as an aside, I think most women are pre-programmed to beware of the spiked drink but would imagine that a man would take this kind of thing more casually? I urge all guys & girls to take care in bars & clubs & even if you have to take your drink to the loo with you, it's better than waking up like this poor guy, paralysed & unaware of what has happened.

I think he is a bit embarrassed aswell. As i said hes not a tourist. Hes lived her for years. Just goes to show you. Never let your guard down. Hes lucky. It could have been a hel_l of a lot worse. Hes 99% sure that it was a farang. Just shows you. Be careful who you trust. Hes on the mend now. I'll see him tomorrow night.

From what you're saying Jockstar it sounds like he was done by a fellow Scandinavian whom he knew.Never trust a man who uses norse code, they always make a dash for it if they can fjord it.

As a Scotsman Jockstar you should turn your immediate attention to the joke section where a certain attractive Thai beauty has been denigrating certain Scottish characteristics......

I'd change the type of bars I drank in.

A similar thing happened to me but like a previous poster, I got high as I was so tolerant of drugs.

"quwart"? - I'd write, and say as "kooat"

I'm off to the jokes section to see what's going on.

How did he get home? Surely someone saw who he was with - security?

maybe not a spiked beer , it can be done by spiking a cigarette now.

happened recently in UK >>>

"Spiked Cigarettes Lead U.K. Police to Review Date-Rape Campaign

Oct. 24 (Bloomberg) -- U.K. police may review date-rape awareness campaigns because a woman was raped after smoking a cigarette dipped in chemicals this month.

``We have to give warnings to women,'' Alistair Campbell, a spokesman for Operation Sapphire, the Metropolitan Police's rape- investigations unit, said via telephone. Spiked cigarettes are something ``we have to take into consideration. Not only don't accept drinks from strangers, but cigarettes as well.''

A rape clinic in Kent said on Oct. 13 that a woman was raped after smoking a cigarette soaked in an embalming fluid containing formaldehyde that disorientates victims. The most common form of drink spiking is adding alcohol, according to police. Sedatives Rohypnol and GHB are among drugs used to spike drinks. Violent crime has doubled in the past six years and rape cases are also rising, government figures show.

The Association of Chief Police Officers will publish a study aimed at highlighting drug-assisted rape next month, using forensic analysis of all cases of sexual assaults where drugs or alcohol were used. Operation Sapphire will also review sexual offences in the U.K. next month and will wait until completing that before considering any changes to current campaigns.

In 2003, 627 rapists were convicted out of 1,649 reported cases of female rape in England and Wales, according to Home Office statistics. That's up from 607 convictions from 1,011 in 2002. The maximum punishment for rape in the U.K. is life imprisonment.

``It's a very worrying development,'' Amanda Sandford, a representative for ASH, an anti-smoking charity. ``Women should be more careful at this additional risk. It's a phenomenon in the U.S. at the moment and we'll keep an eye on it but hope it doesn't catch on here.''

The first U.K. victim was probably a woman in South Wales who was reported by the local police force as having been given a drug-soaked cigarette at a nightclub in Swansea in September 2004.

``We can control drugs and drinks through laws but this is such an isolated case,'' said Home Office spokeswoman Alison Macleod. ``However we could possibly build awareness of it into our `Spiked' campaigns.''

Hate to say it, but he kind of asked for it. I've gotten flamed for this kind of opinion before, but cool your jets guys until you've heard what I'm really saying.

I am NOT saying that he "deserved" getting drugged and robbed, so please don't misinterpret my post as such, OK?

What I am saying is that if you continue to put yourself in "dangerous" situations, you can't be entirely surprised when something finally goes bad for you. It's kind of inevitable when you behave like that.

Now, of course, the alcoholics are going to start calling me a prude and a bible-thumping goodie-to-shoes, but hang on a minute. I'm not advocating prohibition or anything like that. It's perfectly fine to have a few drinks with dinner or even get hammered now and then, but it sounds to me like this guy had more than a few drinks, and that this was a pretty common thing for him to do.

Given that fact, I'd say he should have known better, especially at his age. Getting hammered and then wandering off without his mates in a city of 10+ million is a bad idea. Right? And if he does stuff like this on a regular basis, then he's just increasing the odds that he'll be targetted for a crime by people who hang around and prey on drunk tourists. Especially in this city.

Getting hammered on a weekly (or daily) basis is fine if you're 22 years old, but after 20 years of that kind of behavior, it should start to dawn on people that they might not get f'cked with so much if they just stayed sober.

Heck, when I was 22, I probably drank my weight in alcohol every month, but these days, I'd rather be able to REMEMBER an enjoyable evening.

So the lesson here guys is that if you want to get hammered, invite a few close friends over to your house and have a BBQ/poker night. But if you want to go out in public and drink socialable, then TWO drinks is the limit for the night (THREE if you're not driving). After that, switch to soft drinks and enjoy your evening.

Anything more than that and you're pushing your luck, in more than one way.

This one agrees with all you say :o

It's sad when you see 40+ year olds behaving like 20 year olds every night.

Bangkok is a dangerous place when you are drunk, whether you are a short-time tourist or an experienced business owner.

I drank nearly every night for years in Bangkok, and shit happened, of course - it would anywhere in the world.

I also didn't touch a drop for many years and NOTHING dangerous happened to me - it doesn't take a genius to figure out why so many tourists or experienced ex-pats get robbed and worse.

The usual system is for the prostitutes or 'honey traps' to spike their nipples. Becasue the drugs are not administered in a controlled way, the drugger will give far more than is necessary, resulting in a very serious dose that you need to be fit and healthy to recover from.

My friend in the German embassy tells me they get lots of cases every month.

The story in the UK is that you wake up missing a kidney.

hey, maybe the new drink and cigarette display laws will help.

OK, that's just straight up urban-legend BS. Any story that's got a "My friend told me...." line in it is pure myth. I bet your German friend knows about "poisonous toilet spiders" and "heads exploding from eating Pop Rocks" too, right?

Try not to believe everything you hear while sitting on a barstool, OK? The guy sitting next to you isn't THAT smart.... heheh.

Mickied by the sounds of it. Order bottles - keep drink with you at all time or have a mate look after it. Too easy to be taken these days. Beware of people you dont really know. :o

I agree. Jess is a nice guy but his demeanor suggests he needs someone a bit more experienced than a fellow backpacker to hang with who can subtly pull him aside and say "don't do/say/touch/eat/marry that".

Hi Jockstar!

Firstly - sorry to hear about your mate - noone desrves that crap and it just goes to show that noone's immune to it - no matter how long they've lived here...

Secondly - can we assume that this took place in BKK? Understand if you don't want to/can't name the establishment he was drinking in, but in what area was it? Just as a heads up to others?

What sort of security is in force at his hotel?

Why didn't the security guard or the hotel reception staff take note of a resident returning to his room, totally intoxicated, and possibly being assisted by unknown persons?

He would have needed to get his room key from reception.

The guy can't remember coming home, perhaps unscrupulous hotel staff fed him a drug in the guise of a hangover cure, helped him to his room and waited for the drug to take effect before helping themselves to his possessions.

Sometimes the truth is where it is not expected to be.

Thanks Bambi, you are a star. I know my translation wasn't totally correct.

I would be tempted to print that translation on something the size of a business card, have it laminated and then you can show it when you order the drinks as well.

It sickens me the fact that they EVEN stole his wedding ring. that is sacred and must have many memories... Forget the money, electronics but at least leave the guy his ring, unless it was studded with diamonds.....

I hope he gets over all this quickely xxx

Yes but then remove the final 'khao jai mai khrap?' Fine when you're struggling with words and being understood is iffy, but it becomes a tad patronizing when you add it to the crystal clear written line. :o

BTW, I don't think this method puts you in the clear.. Drinks can easily be spiked AFTER being opened and sitting in front of you, especially if you've had a few. You know, just gaze away with foggy eyes, drunkenly staring into the distance... really, it's easy. And.. it seems to assume you don't trust the bar/stall/drink vendor.

Cheers,

Chanchao
