A rheumatism specialist will head to Cambodia next week to treat Thai Patriot Network leader Veera Somkwamkid, Foreign Ministry spokesman Thani Thongphakdi said yesterday.

Thani said the ministry had asked the doctor from Rajvithi Hospital to visit Veera in Phnom Penh's Prey Sar prison.

The Cambodian government jailed Veera and Ratree Pipattanapaiboon for espionage last year.

Foreign Minister Surapong Towichukchaikul said that though he had not been given Veera's latest medical report, he had heard that the man's hands were swollen and probably painful. Also, medication available in Cambodia is different from what is prescribed in Thailand.

Surapong said that even though he was going to meet his Cambodian counterpart Hor Nam Hong to discuss other issues, he would try to discuss the possibility of bringing Veera back to Thailand.

As for the ThaiCambodia border conflict, Surapong said Defence Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapha would be visiting Cambodia on December 21, when the General Border Committee is scheduled to meet.

In a related development, Surapong said Thailand had filed its statement with the International Criminal Court in the Hague, Netherlands, and that Cambodia was expected to file its statement by March. The case should be considered in June.

This clown is in the news again! I still do not understand why the preferential treatment. He should be treated like any other criminal in the Cambodian prison system.

The Cambodians are showing their compassion treating a convicted spy in this manner.

You can be sure it wouldn't be reciprocal.

I have no idea, but does Thailand have Cambodians incarcerated for real or alleged spying?

BTW the engineer caught trying to get k. Thaksin's flight-plan, convicted as a threat to national security and sentenced to seven years, was pardoned after a week or so. K. Thaksin even went to the prison to fetch him. It seems k. Veera with a sentence of seven years as well must have been a real bad boy, probably related to refusing to acknowledge the charge :ermm:

Many. The link below is just the tip of the iceberg. There were swathes of arrests during the Democrat's tenure especially during the clashes over Preah Vihear.

More recently, four Cambodians have been killed in the past week by the Thai Army for allegedly being illegal loggers, their bodies forcibly cremated and a further six Cambodians are still missing.

The Thai Military is not accountable for these killings and is never investigated in such cases.

Yes, almost forgot that. The three arrested for spying in/against Thailand seems a bit of a tit-for-tat. Similar to the USA/CCCP during the cold war and beyond. No idea what has become of them, probably lingering in a Thai jail as comfy as the Cambodian equivalent (or to be more precise: a 'avoid at all costs' location)

(BTW The killing of loggers, burning of them, etc., we discussed before and I'm not going to remark on it again in this thread which is on spying.)
