'No meddling in Suphoth probe'

The Nation

Deputy PM Chalerm Yoobumrung yesterday told the Senate Standing Committee on Corruption Investigation and Good Governance that there was no bullying or foul play involving politicians in the investigation into the robbery at the residence of suspended Transport permanent secretary Suphoth Sublom. As of press time, police were still questioning Suphoth at his Lat Phrao home about the robbery.

During Chalerm's testimony to the committee, Senator Rosana Tositrakul questioned if the money was planted at Suphoth's home because the case was linked to politicians and urged that this case should be investigated with justice.

Chalerm said that it was unlikely the money was planted and there was clear evidence in the case hence the outcome could not be manipulated. Chalerm said that while the corruption investigation was going on, the investigation into the robbery case was complete and police were waiting to arrest three more suspects. Saying that Suphoth still could not explain why he had so much money, Chalerm said that many politicians liked to keep money at home and hence the authorities should investigate politicians overseeing various projects.

When Senator Khamnoon Sitthisaman urged for a crackdown on corruption probes into ministry projects in the past five years, Chalerm said the committee should request PM Yingluck Shinawatra to do it.

Deputy National Police chief General Panupong Singhara na Ayutthaya told the committee that the police still did not know the exact amount of stolen cash. Police had retrieved Bt18 million from eight suspects but the amount of stolen money kept changing, raising suspicions. He said police would work as per the law and justice system. He also said the suggestion that the money might be planted was impossible. He said the alleged gang leader Weerasak Chualee might make away with more than Bt100 million.

So 'don't ask me, I'm only a Deputy-PM, and don't have the authority, to do anything ?' or 'I can't pass your request on, as I only see her occasionally, at weekly Cabinet-meetings' or 'why not ask someone with family-experience of these things' ?

Of course he interfered in the case and others too by shooting his fat mouth off at who did what long before any investigation had started. An offence in most countries.

Dep PM: Politicians Hide Corruption Money in their Homes

A deputy prime minister claims that three politicians hid corruption money in their homes, in the same way as a former transport ministry permanent secretary who now faces charges of unusual wealth.

The Senate committee on anti-corruption and governance invited Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobumrung and National Deputy Police Chief Police General Phanupong Singhara yesterday to give information on the robbery at the home of the Transport Ministry's former Permanent Secretary Supoj Saplom, after a large amount of cash was stolen from Supoj's home.

Chalerm said the investigators are speeding up their investigation and hunting for three additional suspects in the robbery who remain at large.

He said the incident shows that many politicians are involved with corruption.

The minister claimed that some of the information suggested that three politicians have concealed a large pile of cash in their homes the same manner Supoj did.

One of them is a former member of the now defunct Thai Rak Thai, whose construction firm was losing money for years.

Meanwhile, Phanupong suggested two possible motives behind the robbery.

First, the perpetrators might be working under the orders of a powerful authority figure.

Second, the perpetrators wanted to expose that the politicians have accumulated wealth from corruption.

Phanupong believes more cash remains stashed inside Supoj's home.

Committee member Kamnun Sithisaman suggested that the government set up an independent panel to investigate the case for transparency.

He said there should be an investigation of the work of the previous and present governments for the past 5 or 10 years, given that several of the projects they have pushed for are suspicious.

Kamnun added that such a more extensive corruption probe will help tone down the criticism that the case against Supoj is being exploited as a tool to attack the previous government.

Crikey!!!! This is astounding - I thought that all Thai politicians were an upstanding and honest breed and this has come as such a shock to me that I can't quite take it all in!!!!. If I had been eating corn flakes when I heard of this revelation then I'm sure I would have choked on them :jap:.

Ex-top Transport Official Affirms Only 5 Mln Baht Robbed

The former transport permanent secretary insists only 5 million baht was stolen from his home.

He claims he asked the authorities to interrogate him at the hotel because he needs to attend a conference there.

Last night, at the Centara Grand Hotel in Rachaprasong, Commissioners of the Metropolitan Police Region 4, Police Major General Suthee Nanekunthee and Wangthonglang Police Station Commander, Police Major Tawat Wongsangai met former Transport Permanent Secretary Supoj Saplom at the hotel room on 47th floor for an interrogation.

His home was robbed on the night of November 12.

Last night's investigation took about two hours.

After the interrogation was completed, Police Major General Suthee said the interview focused on the amount of money stolen.

He added that Supoj asked the authorities to meet and interview him at the hotel for his convenience, as he is attending a conference there.

Supoj insisted that he lost only 5 million baht in cash, but police have seized 18.1 million baht in cash.

Police Major General Suthee went on to say all of the stolen money was seized by the Committee of the National Anti-Corruption or NCCC.

The police will continue the investigation and may contact the former transportation permanent secretary again to provide more evidence.

It might be interesting to check around Chalerm's house. A former policeman buying a 33 million Baht Bentley? Maybe he won the lottery.

Yes, maybe!!!! I'm sure that he could influence the result of the winning ticket if he wanted!!!.

Two things:

- Chalerm meddled when he preempted the investigation by declaring the outcome.

- If Supoth is left off the hook I presume he will not ask for any of the money above the cited 5 million back.

A few years ago when Chalerm's sons were frequently in the news for all the wrong reasons, one son, poor boy, always had trouble late at night remembering who his father was-'Do you know who my father is?' he would ask strangers in pubs in an aggressive manner. At the time they were ofter seen in the casinos at Poipet, spending 40,000 baht or more gambling. No doubt Daddy was well used to keeping large sums of cash at home for their activities.

Why would a senior member of the government have to assure people there would be 'no bullying or meddling' this time? Is that usually the case then?

Sigh, Here we go again. The "senior member of the government didn't feel the need to assure people etc". He said there was "no bullying or meddling". And why did he say that? 99% probability because some supposed journalist from the Nation asked the question " Did the Government bully or meddle in the case concerning Supoth?"

Why do you guys insist on finding a conspiracy everywhere? Oh, yes, it's because you don't like the government and everything they do has to have an ulterior motive.

Like someone else said KISS.

That's a good one charges of unusual wealth.

How much is usual wealth.:D I think I am a little short.

You can bet your bottom dollar baht that Chalerm cleaned out his house before he opened his mouth.

The one thing that I can't figure out is if it was a conspiracy how munch did they ppay the robbers to do it and plead guilty.

Probably red shirts do any thing they are told no matter how stupid it is.

That is so astute I would have difficulty arguing against it.

I'm not a big fan of the +1 posters, as I tend to think, haven't these <deleted> people got a mind of their own? I have to say though, I do agree with these sentiments.

Politicians, corruption/meddling/incompetence/etc, appear to be in the character, no matter the bloodline. Good politicians like good liars need a good memory or, and in the former case, speech writers. Thai style politicians, for the most part, have demonstrated a complete lack of both.

No, because this country is overflowing with real conspiracies from ALL sides.

You can sigh all you like but there are some who just see things for what they are and not with a political bias. Most Thai politicians are not worth supporting.
