US Embassy 'to keep out of Thai affairs'

The Nation

Royalist group protests against meddling in Thai justice system

The US Embassy in Bangkok yesterday issued a statement emphasising its policy of not interfering in Thailand’s internal affairs after an uproar on its Facebook page threatened to boil over.

Thai royalists recently bombarded the embassy's Facebook page with criticism of Washington's stance on recent lese majeste convictions. Royalist group Siam Samakkhi, led by Tul Sitthisomwong, yesterday held an anti-US rally outside the embassy on Wireless Road and submitted a petition to protest against what it sees as Washington's interference in Thailand's judicial system. A petition was also submitted to UN officials.

The UN and US earlier expressed concern over the harsh sentencing of people convicted of lese majeste following verdicts handed down against Amphon "Akong" Tangnoppakul and dual Thai-US citizen Lerphong Wichaikammart, also known as Joe Gordon.

Amphon was sentenced to 20 years in jail for sending four text messages insulting the monarchy, while Lerpong was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for translating parts of a banned book about the King and posting them on the Internet while in the United States.

Posting on its Facebook page, the US Embassy repeated Ambassador Kristie Kenney's earlier statement that the US government has the utmost respect for the Thai monarchy, the Royal Family and Thai culture.

"President Obama, Secretary Clinton and the US Embassy in Bangkok all recently offered heartfelt congratulations to His Majesty the King of Thailand on the very special occasion of his 84th birthday. Thailand is our oldest friend in Asia and we will continue to stand by the Thai people," the statement said.

The embassy was treated to a dose of its own "freedom of expression" medicine when rival Thai political groups faced off in an obscenity-laced exchange on its Facebook page over the course of a few days.

The heated exchange followed the ambassador's "chat" session a week ago with fellow Twitter users, during which "freedom of expression" was a dominant topic. The session came a day after Thai-American Joe Gordon was sentenced to two and a half years in jail for translating parts of the banned book "The King Never Smiles" and posting the passages on a website while in the US.

The embassy issued a statement on the heated Facebook exchange, saying, "As always, we welcomed your discourse and diverse views on our wall and pages. Please be mindful of our existing terms of service, however, by refraining from using language that is profane or abusive."

A glance at the embassy's FB page on Thursday night revealed that all postings had been deleted.

Police uncover bombs, guns

The Nation

Nakhon Si Thammarat

A police raid into the home of a drug suspect yesterday uncovered six bars of powergel explosives, three kilograms of urea fertiliser as well as several guns.

Urea fertiliser is usually used to boost the power of bombs.

Sayan Khiriphet, 45, was apparently taken by surprise when police landed at his doorstep in Phrommakhiri district. The raid was conducted in response to tipoffs that Sayan was involved in drug trade.

Though no illicit drugs were found at his home, Sayan faces charges for illegally possessing explosives and guns. The suspect claims the explosives were only used for the purpose of fishing.

Phatthalung warned of flash floods

The Nation

Up to 28 villages in five districts of Phatthalung province have been warned against risks of mudslides and flash floods brought on by anticipated heavy rain, the provincial authorities said yesterday.

The five districts are Kong Ra, Tamot, Si Banphot, Srinagarindra and Pa Phayom, while the areas most at risk are those at the foot of the Banthad mountain range. Visitors are also not allowed to go near waterfalls in national parks.

In an official update yesterday, nine provinces including Bangkok continue being flooded, covering 3,652 villages in 80 districts where more than 4 million people have been affected. So far, 730 people have lost their lives to the flooding, with three still missing. Renovation and postflood cleanup measures have been launched in 56 provinces.

Meanwhile, nine provinces in the North and Northeast, covering 8,724 villages in 105 districts, have been declared disaster zones in terms of cold temperatures.

So far, 5 per cent of Bangkok is still flooded though Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra has promised that the entire city will be completely dry by December 22.

Chutidej dismisses police theories

The Nation

The widow of Chutidej Suwannakerd dismissed the police bureau's theory that her husband was killed due to conflicts associated with his amulet trade.

Natthai Khruangsai also said it was not possible that Chutidej was killed over extra marital affairs - another theory emphasised on by the police.

KU researcher wins Bt20m grant to develop plant breeds

Wannapa Khaopa

The Nation

A Kasetsart University (KU) researcher was yesterday awarded a prestigious grant worth Bt20 million to develop new breeds of Jatropha curcas, also known as the physic nut plant, for use in biofuels and animal feed.

Professor Peerasak Srinives was awarded the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA)'s Chair Professor grant to pursue his research proposal, "Breeding to Accelerate Domestication of Novel Jatropha for Fuel and Feeds". Peerasak is a researcher with the department of agronomy at the faculty of agriculture at KU's Kamphaeng Saen Campus.

The Crown Property Bureau Foundation funded the Bt20million grant for Peerasak's team to conduct the fiveyear research project to develop breeds of the plant as alternative sources of sustainable energy.

"We will try to reduce the weak points of this kind of plant. They cannot survive during floods, have some poisons, have low yields and do not ripen at the same time. So the new breeds will be floodresistant, have fewer poisons, have higher yields and also ripen at the same time," Peerasak said.

"We aim to create breeds with yields increased from 200300 kilograms per rai to 400500kg, which will be high enough for industrial use. Also, if they ripen at the same time, agriculturists can harvest them at the same time. This will result in a larger amount of produce for the industry. And when the plant's poisons are reduced and made safe enough, the residue left after the fuelproduction process will be used to feed fish," he said.

The researcher said the challenge facing his team was a tough one, but it would do its utmost to achieve its goals as he and his fellow researchers want to promote the use of biofuels in the country.

Peerasak is the second researcher to receive the Chair Professor grant, after fellow KU academic Professor Jumras Limtrakul of the chemistry department. Jumras won the Bt20million grant in 2009 to conduct his research project, "Application of Molecular Nanotechnology to Industrially Important Nanostructed and Nanoporous Materials."

A ceremony presenting the grant to Peerasak's team was held at the Crown Property Bureau in Bangkok yesterday.
