House gives nod to bill protecting children

The Nation

The House of Representatives yesterday voted unanimously to approve in principle a draft law on international cooperation for civil action against the violation of custody rights.

The Cabinet proposed the bill in line with the Constitution's Section 152 so as to support the protection of children's rights.

The bill, if promulgated, will facilitate assistance for kidnapped or illegally detained foreign children on Thai soil. Thailand is a signatory of the 1980 Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction.

During the House session, MPs expressed support for the bill and hoped that it would help curtail transnational human trafficking and improve the protection of children.

After the voting session, the House also set up an ad-hoc committee to review the draft.

The ad-hoc committee has 36 members. Of them, 12 come from the private sector as required by the Constitution when a draft law related to children is considered.

In the West it is mainly the fathers that are given a raw deal when is comes to custody of children.

Again we are dealing with double standards. It`s meant to be sex equality, unless it involves imposing the father to contribute towards the welfare payments of the mother who no longer needs to work and becomes supported by welfare for as long as the kids are under 18 years of age.

If this new law is enforced, than there will be nowhere for fathers to seek justice with their children.

One of the 'protecting children' loopholes a lot of organized crime has been taking advantage of for awhile now.... Something like a max. of 6 years in jail if you're under 18 for murder. Juvy is packed to the brim with 16 and 17 year old killers. So when they get out, they are in their mid 20's and don't know how to do anything legal.... wonder what they'll do next?
