Parliament Journalists Gives Designations to Politicians

As is tradition every year, Parliamentary journalists have thought up designations for politicians.

The prime minister has been dubbed the ‘dying star’ for her frequent absence from Parliamentary sessions, while the House of Representatives has been called the ‘shell of the red crab.’

The reasoning behind the ‘shell of the red crab’ for the House, according to the journalists, stems from the fact that the Pheu Thai Party won a majority in the House and more than 20 red-shirt members represented the party as MPs.

The journalists went on to say that Pheu Thai MPs would disrupt parliamentary sessions with their defense of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, whose nickname means crab, her brother former premier Thaksin Shinawatra and other Shinawatra family members.

The Senate has been dubbed ‘ancient China’ because it has failed to meet the public’s high expectations of it and did not have any achievements this year.

This can be compared to ‘ancient China,’ which is of value but cannot be put to real use and can only be displayed.

House Speaker Somsak Kiatsuranont has been given the nickname, the ‘fake hammer of the Dubai brand’ as he admitted to traveling to meet with Thaksin abroad, a meeting which is widely believed to have netted him the House speaker post.

He has been heavily criticized for being biased during House sessions, with many believing he is acting on orders from Thaksin who resides in Dubai.

Senate Speaker General Thiradej Meepien is being called the ‘elusive general’ as he did not fulfill his duties as promised while campaigning for the job.

He also evaded questions about various issues from the media, saying he cannot remember or that he is not involved in the issue, in order to avoid responsibility, which is not appropriate action for someone who is a general.

Opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva has been nicknamed ‘delayed handsome’ because when he was prime minister, he failed to produce key achievements but now that he is the Opposition leader, he often comes up with valuable ideas.

Parliament’s ‘rising star’ went to Democrat Samut Songkram MP Rangsima Rodrasamee for her outstanding speeches during House sessions and being stable in her performance.

The ‘dying star’ designation was given to Yingluck for her constant absence from parliamentary sessions signifying what little significance she gives to the legislative branch, despite her earlier pledge that she recognizes the legislative branch’s importance, in pushing the country forward.

The ‘opponents of the year’ was awarded to Democrat MP Attaporn Polabutr and Pheu Thai’s Jatuporn Prompan as every time they clashed during House sessions, protests would erupt left and right.
