Gun owners part of murder investigation

THE NATION

Seven owners of .40-calibre pistols will be summoned for questioning as police continue their investigation into the murder of Udorn Kraiwatnusorn, a prominent Pheu Thai-affiliated local politician in Samut Sakhon.

Udorn was found dead at a PTT petrol station with eight shots in the head from this type of gun.

Pol Colonel Jamraeng Sudjai, superintendent of Samut Sakhon Police Station, said yesterday that all seven persons who had this type of gun registered to them would be called in for interrogation.

Police would also inspect Democrat MP Khanchit Thabsuwan's car after he surrendered on Tuesday as the sole suspect in Sunday's fatal shooting of Udorn. Khanchit at the time denied charges of premeditated murder.

Jamraeng said police would seek more information about the case from witnesses.

Some had contacted police to volunteer information, saying they had not come forward earlier because they feared for their safety.

Police have sent a letter to Speaker Somsak Kiatsuranont asking the House of Representatives to submit Khanchit to the judicial process.

Khanchit cannot be detained by authorities during a House session because he has an MP's constitutional immunity.

The House will vote on whether his immunity should be stripped.

Series of Bombings in Pattani Province

Bombs rocked Pattani Province last night, though no injuries have been reported.

Panare police officers along with the military bomb squad last night investigated the scene of a bomb attack in Pattani's Ban Klang Subdistrict.

The bomb squad has cut all mobile networks to prevent another bomb from exploding.

At the scene of the explosion, authorities found a crater that is 1-meter wide and 1-meter deep, bomb fragments and a picnic gas canister.

As part of the initial interrogation, Panare police inspector Police Captain Prapan Yeeseng, along with other seven officers in a pick-up truck and two motorbikes had been patrolling the area where insurgents detonated a 10 kilogram explosive device.

In response, officers escaped and exchanged gun fire with insurgents. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

Police officers are working to arrest the insurgents.

Officers believe southern insurgents were behind the attack.

Mass Bangkok exodus for upcountry New Year celebrations

image_2011122911083888015F09-E656-328B-8CAAEDC3C943CD19.jpg

BANGKOK, Dec 29 - Bangkok's Mo Chit 2 bus terminal was crowded on Thursday morning with passengers returning home for the 2012 New Year, while the Transport Company prepared buses sufficient for 5,000 trips per day, or 25,000 trips for the five-day holiday period.

Wuttichart Kalayanamitr, Transport Company president, said he expected the number of passengers would peak Thursday and be crowded through Friday.

He said normal routes can operate as usual except that some parts of roads in the central provinces of Ayutthaya and Saraburi where damages from the recent flood have not yet been repaired.

However, the number of passengers using bus services since Dec 25 has dropped compared to the same period last year.

Mr Wuttichart said only some 2 million passengers are expected to return home during the New Year festival, down from about 3 million last year. This is due to some of them still staying in their hometowns repairing flood-damaged homes. (MCOT online news)

Red Shirt Leader Faces Defamation Charge in Songkhla Province

A red shirt leader was escorted by police and boarded a plane to Songkhla, where he is to face charges of defaming a Democrat MP.

According to his lawyer, Arisman Pongruengrong, a red shirt leader will be transported to Songkhla Province, where he is wanted for allegedly defaming Songkhla MP Sirichoke Sopa a member of the Democrat Party.

Last year, Arisman openly accused Sirichoke of overstepping his authority by tampering with the annual police reshuffle.

Earlier today, the red shirt leader reported to the Prachachuen Police Station and was later escorted by the police to the airport where he boarded the plane to face charges in the Songkhla Court.

Arisman is also being accompanied by his wife, MP Rapipan Pongruengrong, who is planning to use her MP position to post bail for her husband.

Meanwhile, Sirichoke commented on the case, claiming that he was defamed by Arisman during the red shirt unrest last year.

He also says that should the court decide to release the red shirt leader on bail, he will not contest the decision but will allow the legal process takes its course.
