Elephant Birth At The Nong Nooch Gardens

Featured Replies

Dramatic birth at the Nong Nooch Gardens, we witness this happy but dangerous event.

Giving birth is always a dramatic event regardless of whether the pregnant female is human or not. Elephant births are particularly dramatic and if they are not carefully monitored by their elephant master they can often result in the death of the calf and serious injury for the elephant.

We received word of an elephant who was about to give birth at the Nong Nooch Gardens in Jomtien. The elephant handlers do their best to intrude as little as possible during and after the birth to ensure that nature is allowed to take its course. However when the calf is born in captivity the elephants are prevented from harming themselves or the calf during the birth.

The new mother in this case is Duenpen aged 19 who specializes in performing football shows and taking tourists for rides around the park. As you can see the birth was extremely dramatic and Duenpen became extremely agitated as she was about to give birth and fell to the floor. The calf was born and the master made sure that the newly born elephant was not crushed by her mother in the confusion.

Eventually the baby boy rose to his feet and was introduced to his mother for the first time, once again under strict supervision from the master. The boy was not rejected by his mother which pleased the Nong Nooch staff and is a great ending to this wonderful story.

In another five weeks the baby will be dodging night time traffic whilst it visits all the bars in Pattaya.
